CINCINNATI, OH Publisher Daniel Reitz, Sr., of Mundania Press and the editorial team of Danielle Ackley-McPhail, L. Jagi Lamplighter, Lee C. Hillman, and Jeffrey Lyman have joined forces to turn the award-winning Bad-Ass Faeries books, previously published by Marietta Publishing, into a hot new series featuring the rising stars of faerie fiction, combined with the digital artistry of Grimm Visions.
The premiere book in the series, Bad-Ass Faeries was a finalist for the 2007 Dream Realm Award for Best Anthology and includes the work of such popular figures as Monica Richards, fantasy author and the vocalist of Faith and the Muse, Keith R.A. DeCandido, the author of Dragon Precinct and active in the Star Trek literary franchise, and CJ Henderson, author of the long-popular Teddy London and Jack Hagee series of novels, and the upcoming Brooklyn Knights, from TOR books.
The next book in the series, Just Plain Bad, lives up to its illustrious predecessor; in March it was the winner of the 2009 EPPIE Award for Best. Notable contributors include, John Passarella (Wither, Wither's Rain), Phil Brucato (Ravens in the Library), and a return by the ever-popular CJ Henderson.
"We get a lot of looks when people read the name," says senior editor, Danielle Ackley-McPhail, "not to mention a lot of smiles, which is nice, but the real intent behind the shocking title was to bring people back to the roots of the faerie myth, which are more often dark and grim and perhaps mischievous, rather than bright and pretty, as portrayed in the media and popular culture."
Under the new banner of Mundania Press there are several new books planned in the series, all spearheaded by the original editorial team. The next book, In All Their Glory, is scheduled for release in 2010 and will maintain a loosely military theme that stems from many of the warrior faeries found throughout world mythology. While a full list of contributors is not yet available, a highlight of the collection will be an original, unpublished story by noted military author David Sherman (Starfist, Demontech). The series will be released in trade paperback, eBook, and signed and numbered, limited edition hardcover.
"Bad-Ass Faeries offers a fresh look at a pervasive denizen of our mythological subconscious," comments Alyce Wilson, the editor of Wild Violet Magazine. "Much as in Peter Pan, the collection will leave the readers applauding, cheering, 'I believe in bad-ass faeries.'"
