What can I say? I'm a poetry n00b

Of all the years I've gone to school, there is nothing I detest more than having to analyze poetry. Call me dense or stupid, but honestly, I've never seen the value of reading (or writing for that matter) and spending hours dissecting some poem in hopes of finding some underlying message. Quite frankly, most of the time I'm skeptical of the existance of any such "underlying messages"; I find it more likely that the people who sit and read poetry endlessly to find their "hidden meanings" suddenly formulate a metaphor within the poem based on random and sometimes unrelated "symbols" in order to make it seem like they haven't wasted their lives reading "poetry". Of course, there are times where there actually is some concrete metaphor, which are of course exciting and fun when you do find those, but conversely, there are times when the messages people come up with seem lame, baseless, and false.

Perhaps my hate for poetry is due to my inability to "find" those metaphors without having to read the poem ten or twenty times. But I guess I have all those years of English to thank for that.

I think I'll stick to my rants and argumentative essays.

Well, I'm done venting then, back to homework.
