I really need to conduct a scientific study on what the conditions are that cause me to have bizarre, fantastical dreams that are lucid enough to linger well into my waking day.
Last night (well, more like this morning) I had a funny dream about Shakespeare's Hamlet and the role of metafiction. In the dream I was simultaneously watching a test screening and reading the script of a new Clerks film. In a particularly risen debate--much like the ethics of galactic civil war debate surrounding the destruction of the second Death Star--Dante and Randal touched upon the merits of Hamlet's production of The Murder of Gonzago. It began by sharing discourse over the two's interpretations of Hamlet's overall theme. Dante decided it was about angst and sided with psychoanalytic criticisms, whilst Randal decided it was about deception. When challenged, Randal used The Murder of Gonzago as his main textual evidence, considering Hamlet's play within the play a "clever ruse" (after all, Hamlet used it as a means to expose his uncle as his father's murderer).
Interestingly, the Rosencrantz & Guildenstern of the 'View Askew'niverse, Jay & Silent Bob, made no appearance in either the film or the dream.
