Character name: Vossler York Azelas
Fandom: Final Fantasy XII
Timeline: Right before the Shiva crashes.
Age: 38

~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths:
Captain Vossler York Azelas is classified as Hume. Like anyone else from FFXII, he has the abilities to Magick; however, he relies mostly on wielding his sword, Nightmare. If he is in critical contidion, he can attack up to 12 times in a row (Enrage Status effect). Vossler is immune to most Magicks have negative status effects (Petrify, Doom, Disease, Reverse, Disable, Immobilize, Silence, Blind, Poisen, Oil, Lure, Warp, Poach, Fractional Damange, Sight Unseeing, Syphon, Dumerology, Charm, Achilles, Wither, and Addle. He is most known for casting Haste (Speeding himself up slightly) , Shell (Protective magick), and Reflect (self explanatory).

How would they use their abilities?:
At most, he’d scuffle with people he doesn’t see eye to eye with re: whoever that pissed him off. Chances are, he’d keep mostly to himself. Being one of the past Captains in command of the ‘Order of the Kinghts of Dalmasca’ before retreating to aid the Resistance, Vossler does know when to show some restraint/tact. While his unquestionable loyalty to his country comes first, he was rumored to also have joined said order due to ‘Love of Battle’-meaning, there would be times where he just might pick a fight to let off some steam should it not interfere with ‘Restoring Dalmasca’. Putting Dalmasca’s needs above his own, no matter the cost, Vossler generally ignores anything unrelated to his goals.

Appearance:
Standing slightly below 6 feet, Vossler still wears the standard issued uniform from his time serving as Captain in Knights of Dalmasca. (A green undergarment that keeps a good part of his neck and chest bare under brownish-orange leather tunic plated with pieces of square metalwork. His uniform is complete with shorts plated in the same fashion; steel shoulder guards, long protective gauntlets and metal-plated boots that reach his knees, leaving no part of his body unprotected. A belt and a leather choker complete the uniform.) Even without the armor, his military profession can be seen by the way he carries himself and how built he is. With his default frown on his face, Vossler keeps his dark hair slicked back, facial hair short and brown eyes perpetually narrowed. Not the most attractive man out there, but definitely not someone you’d mess with.

Background/Personality:
Vossler is not considered a main character in XII, so there will be some guesswork and assumptions!

The Order of the Knights of Dalmasca is the armed forces of the Kingdom of Dalmasca; it was originally under Basch fon Ronsenburg's Captaincy until his supposed treason, and Vossler Azelas until he retreated to aid the Resistance. Archadian and Dalmascan forces had decided to meet at Nalbina to discuss a peace treaty. However, the heir to the Archadian Empire, Vayne Carudas Solidor, had not wished to settle for this, and planned to kill King Raminas of Dalmasca, and leaked rumors of assassins to the Order. Captain Basch led a force to Nalbina Fortress along with Vossler to aid the king.

Separated from Basch as enemy forces attacked, Vossler rushed ahead to King Raminas with a few of his men, while his main forces - including the injured Reks - stayed behind to fight the Archadians with Basch. Even with his headstart, he somehow managed to arrive after Basch to the King’s chambers, where Basch was already accused of High Treason for ‘killing’ the king. Vayne’s plan was successful in using Basch’s twin brother to do the deed, and peace negotiations between Arcadia and Dalmasca fell apart. Soon after, Dalmasca were brought under Arcadian rule. Arcadia then publicly announced that they had executed him, and Marquis Ondore falsely declared that Ashelia B’nargin Dalmasca dead. Vossler, too, was tricked into thinking Basch was responsible for killing the King, and for the next two years, protected the Princess, as well as gathered as many Dalmascan soldiers as possible to start a Resistance so they could restore their kingdom.

From the little interaction we see between Vossler and Basch, one can deduce that Vossler has little to no patience for weakness (‘It’s as I feared: they’re slowing us down!’ ‘Do not say that! Not all of us are here for love of battle. He fights for his homeland’). Leaving Basch to deal with the injured Dalmascan soldier, he turned his attention to keeping watch for incoming enemies. The easy way he communicates with Basch from here indicated that they have worked well together in the past.

The Resistance stayed underground for two years, until Vayne Carudas Solidor was elected Consul of Rabanastre. Vossler and the Princess had squads of fighters ready themselves in the Garamsythe Waterway during the banquet and attempted to storm the Royal Palace during the fete when security was supposed to be light. However, Vayne knew of the attack beforehand and decided to use himself as bait to lure out the Resistance and made plans to have the Ifrit, an Arcadian Airship, patrol Dalmascan skies. When the Resistance made their move, they were bombed by fire from Ifrit, and lost most of the force in the destruction. Even so, the leaders of the Resistance, Vossler and Ashe, both managed to survive and once again attempted to retreat underground.

During the Two Year gap, Princess Ashe had learned the basics of fighting, and some Magicks. One can assume that Vossler probably had something to do with that change. Here, we see Vossler display leadership skills, as he was the one that led and commanded the attack. While the plan didn’t go as planned, it was still impressive that he managed to rally enough men and gather adequate amount of supplies to be considered enough of a threat for the Vayne to call out the Ifrit.

Ashe was captured and arrested during her escape through the Waterway, and with her a group of thieves that had nothing to do with the attack. The thieves (Vaan, Balthier, and Fran) were sent to the Nalbina Dungeons. While breaking out of Nalbina they found the supposedly dead kinkslayer Basch fon Ronsenburg, and broke him out after he reveals that the death of the king was an setup by Vayne and Basch's twin, Judge Gabranth, who impersonated Basch and in actuality killed King Raminas.

Upon returning to Rabanastre, Basch manage to meet with the surviving soldiers of the Resistance lead by Vossler. Having learnt that ‘Amalia’ (Princess Ashe) was still alive and held by the Empire, Basch was driven by his sense of duty as a Dalmascan Soldier and wanted to save her. The others in the Resistance were wary of Basch-words were cheap. They were still unsure of his loyalty. Though Vossler greeted the him fondly (‘now there’s the Basch I remember!’), he was cautious in making their next move after the failed attack at the Palace (‘I hold men's lives in my hands. I must see foes in every shadow. The night we moved against Vayne, he knew. I will not chance such disadvantage again. I must treat you as I would Ondore-as I would treat any abettor of the Empire.’ ‘Then what will you do? Hold me here in chains? … Some things never change. Do they.’ ‘ Listen to me, Basch. Your cage may have no bars, but it is a cage. The eyes of the Resistance watch unblinking.‘). As a test of faith, Vossler entrusted Basch with an ancient sword to deliver to seek the Marquis's aid in Bhujerba, who has been rumored to fund another Resistance movement in the Sky City.

Here, we see that Vossler does not trust easily. It’s easy to see how much he trusts Basch, though due to his responsibilities to the Resistance, he chose to let their paths remain separate. Placing Dalmasca above his personal life was nothing new at this point. The easy way they communicate suggests that Vossler’s thought process has not changed much in the two years they spent apart.

The Marquis at first seems quite useless. The Archadian Fleet is stationed at Bhujerba at the current time, and the Marquis appears to be collaborating with Vayne behind the Emperor Gramis Gana Solidor's back and providing the Draklor Laboratory with magicite. When he learns that Princess Ashe is held captive by the Empire, rather than giving direct aid, the Marquis has the party arrested by his Archadian "allies", so that they may have a chance to save the Princess.

They were transported to the Dreadnought Leviathan, and the party (Basch, Fran, Balthier, and Vaan), after meeting Princess Ashe, manage to free themselves with Vossler’s help before they were locked up. It turns out that he had somehow snuck aboard the airship with the Marquis’s aid. (‘Not lightly did I beg his aid. Listen, it has been a full two years. I alone have kept Her Majesty safely hidden. I doubted friend and foe alike. I could trust nobody.’) Together, they broke Ashe out of her holding cell. (‘Yet trust his sword we must, traitor or no. I see no other way. We track back, commandeer a ship and make our escape. … Her Majesty cannot abide weakness, least of all in herself. We must make her confront the reality of our plight.’)

On the way to escape the airship, the party ran into Larsa and Penelo. (‘You are Captain Azelas. You will follow me. We must reach the airships before they do.‘ ‘You would let us leave knowing who we are?') As the others defeated Judge Ghis, Vossler secured a ship for their escape. The group made it back to Ondore to regroup, Vossler leaves Ashe in Basch’s care. (‘I would ask you for some time. On our own, we struggle in vain to restore Dalmasca. I must search out some other way. Until I should find it, I would have Basch remain at your side. Doubt him you may, but I measure his loyalty to Dalmasca no less than my own.’)

One can draw the conclusion that it was here that the seed of betrayal was planted. Being alone with Larsa may have convinced Vossler that not all the Empire was bad; that they may stand a chance in restoring Dalmasca with some other means other than bloodshed. We can deduce that it was here that Vossler turns his back on his old way of thinking. He remains loyal to Dalmasca, but he was clearly searching for another way to restore Dalmasca. We do not know where he went for the duration of Ashe talking to the Marquis.

Ashe, determined to restore Dalmasca, is left without proof of her lineage. The Marquis doesn't agree with her plans, and wants Ashe to stay in hiding with him in Bhujerba. Not content with just standing aside, Ashe (with help) made their way to Tomb of Raithwall, where the Dawn Shard is hidden. With this, she could prove her identity as the rightful heir to the throne of Dalmasca. On the way to the tomb the party meets up with Vossler again at the Ogir-Yensa Sandsea. He offers to protect Princess Ashe once again, though he expresses his disdain for the company of Sky Pirates (Balthier and Fran.) Vossler aids the party to retrieve the Dawn Shard, but showed his true intentions when the party is captured by the Archadian Empire's 8th Fleet. (‘If we are to save Dalmasca, we must accept the truth. I will fight this profitless battle no more!’)

It would seem that during his disappearance, he made a deal with the Empire: by handing over the deifacted nethicite, the Dawn Shard, the Empire promised to restore Dalmasca. Vossler's rationale is that since Dalmasca's only future was with the Empire, continued resistance would be pointless. Vossler transports the party to the Shiva, and, opposing Vossler's ideals, the party defeats him in battle. (‘When we return to Dalmasca, we can announce that you are alive and well. I will then continue our negotiations with the Empire. I believe Larsa is the key. He'll listen to us. We should trust him.‘ ‘Who are you, Vossler, to talk of trust?‘ ‘…A son of Dalmasca.’….‘The future of Dalmasca will not be stolen! Why do this, Basch? This struggle is futile. You must know where it leads!‘)

Vossler dies soon after on the Shiva. (‘All I have done - I've ever thought of Dalmasca first.’ ….. ‘Look on what my haste has wrought. Did I act too quick? Or was your return too late? I can serve her no more. You must take up my charge.’) While the ship sinks, Vossler apologizes and tells Basch it is up to him to protect the Princess now. He could have easily gotten off the Airship with the others, but he remains behind. Basch made no move to help him. It was an unspoken agreement that he’d remain aboard the ship.

Judge Ghis brings about his own destruction by experimenting with the nethicite recovered from the Tomb of Raithwall. The party escapes, but Ghis and Vossler are destroyed along with the entire Eighth Fleet, as the Dawn Shard's Mist is released in a violent explosion.

Have you read up on how the game works?:
Yes! The Guide Plug-in that allows characters to communicate with each other is Flaming Ferret! Three ways to earn money-Mooching, Missions, and Starting a Business!

1st person sample:
[The device clicks on to show the… floor? Apparently, the owner of said device dropped it. There was a sigh, then an armor plated foot can be seen a few moments later, and the feed shakes drastically as the person bends down to picks up the device, scowling. The feed caught a flash of the newcomer’s face before it veers sideways, covered roughly by a towel as the man readjusted the gigantic sword strapped to his back. Those who had the pleasure of fighting alongside Vossler before may or may pick out a relatively well-hidden wince of… pain?]

Am I to believe that Ivalice has-

[A growl. This one does not seem pleased.]

Imagine my surprise- to close my eyes aboard the Shiva, and no less then a few moments, I find myself… here.

[A pause.]

Those words may convince those fools, but they weigh too lightly on the scales for my taste. If you’re to take hostages-‘tis common sense to concoct a better tale to tell!

[An unseen glare. He would be more accepting of his situation if he wasn’t feeling the strain from the last battle. Figures that he’d get dropped off in potential enemy territory, injuries and all.]

3rd person sample:
Vossler knew he wasn’t going to last. It was over. From the way Nightmare felt in his hands, the strain of attacking nonstop for so long-

He felt… wrung out. Drained. There wasn’t any of the desperation that one may expect from him, or disappointment-only… regret in himself, mixed in with disappointment. He gasped for breath, and there was an odd sense of relief that it was over.

Falling to his knees as his legs refused to support him, Nightmare clattered noisily beside him. His vision wasn’t going-it wasn’t as dramatic as that-(from past experience, he knew that a Hi-Potion and a full night’s rest later, he’d be good as good as new) but that doesn’t make him any less exhausted. The retreating figures of the Sky Pirates and Her Majesty snapped him out of the small daze he’d fallen into.

Somehow, he managed to face his old comrade.

“All I have done, I’ve only thought of Dalmasca first.”

Nothing much left, but the desire to explain himself to one of his most trusted friend-He as good as turned his back on Dalmasca. He’d lost faith, and tried to do things differently.

He knew he had enough energy to follow them off the ship, to escape with them; hell, he knew Basch probably have the capability to drag both their sorry asses off the airship with plenty of energy to spare-but he knew he wasn’t going to do so.

“I can serve her no more-you must take up my charge.”

Contemplating on what would have happened had things gone differently wasn’t going to change what he’d done. The future of Dalmasca has not yet been stolen. They still had their Knight, and their Princess.

Soothed by that thought, he closed his eyes.
