So, to preface, this is not to be a discussion about most religious views -- e.g. Let's not talk about operating system or anything like that ( Read more... )

given your replies to other people i'd say a desktop or at least a laptop w/ a docking station (do they make those for macs?) aside from the machine you "grab and go" with

it sounds like you need to keep your primary machine separate from your portable, specifically because you leave things running on the current desktop while you're out with a laptop

yeah, that's the problem -- they don't make docking stations for laptops.

I carry my mac laptop the most as a portable, and unfortunately, mac os is really what I want for a desktop, too, if I can have it.

If I feel like spending $$$, I think I will go with a mac mini for new workstation. Possibly with tax return and/or birthday money. Otherwise, I'll probably start at trial period of hooking up one of the laptops to monitor and keyboard and see how annoying that becomes.

i understand; i'm in love w/ my macbook, but i don't do the same things with it that you do (ie: work) - it's my personal machine vs. the dell laptop w/ network storage backups from my job (at least for another month and a half anyway) - why is mac/osx so much more stable than windows? j/k

one question though - can't you load osx onto any compatible machine these days (i *think* it's available) - perhaps you can get an inexpensive barebones desktop and run osx on it?

not legally. There's a whole movement doing "hackintosh" where they hack OSX to run on other platforms. But the bootloader actually looks for a crypto chip on the Apple hardware.

So, it's like jailbreaking an iPhone -- every time there's an update, you have to re-hack your phone. I don't feel like having the machine I want to rely on the most being something where I constantly have to re-hack it to apply the latest updates, or stay vulnerable to a security issue because the latest hack hasn't been applied to the OS yet.

Hey,

There are 3rd party docking stations made for Mac laptops.

Not sure how well they work since Mac started putting the connectors on the sides have but I thought you might like to have a look.

Yeah, I saw those (see comment elsewhere on page). $300 for a docking station is a bit much . . .

They actually seem to work fine with the connectors on the side -- it's just a lot of money

one more time.

They actually DO make docking stations for macs. But they are third party, and REALLY FREAKING EXPENSIVE. so for all intents, no.
