To the old Armenian man that stopped me while I was picking up lunch to comment on my growing belly,

I completely appreciate your confidence at being able to guess the sex of a baby just by the way a woman is carrying. That said, no, it’s a girl. I know, it’s weird, I thought it was a boy too at first, but two separate ultrasound technicians and my doctor have all agreed that my baby is, in fact a girl. I understand that I’m carrying “like a boy there,” but I assure you, again, it’s a girl. I’ll be sure to visit this fine establishment again after I give birth, especially if my baby does turn out, after all, to be a boy, so that you can tell me how you always knew, even though my doctors say it’s a girl.

But thanks for hoping that “whatever it is” will be healthy, I hope for that too. And for not touching my belly, which is always appreciated. Here's hoping my baby, whatever it is, has your kind of moxie and sense of self-assurance.

All best,

Naama
