I went to see Dumbshow by Joe Penhall tonight....
The premise of the play is this: Barry, a successful TV comedian, goes to a hotel room to meet two private bankers who are interested in running his finances and paying him to give an after dinner speech. In reality they are tabloid journalists who are searching for a scoop....
It was brilliant, a three hander with Douglas (Redcap) Hodge, Anna Maxwell Martin (a name to watch out for, she played Lyra Silvertongue in the National's adaptation of His Dark Materials) and Rupert (Maurice) Graves. The star of the show was Douglas Hodge btw, I hope he a nod at the Olivier Awards...
But on the tube on the way home, we were discussing the nature of celebrity and trying to decide how much privacy etc that celebs really deserve. What I don't want to hear is the politically correct Guardian reader take about the infringements of their human rights and their rights to privacy, yada, yada, yada!!! Whether we like it or not, people are desperate to get the dirt on their fave stars, it's human nature to enjoy a little celebrity schaudenfraude and (excuse spelling, I can't be arsed to look it up) - 'Exclusives' sell newspapers and mags etc.
I mean, I get the News of the Screws every week, I may not read every story but even by glancing at the headlines I know exactly what everyone has been getting up to, and despite everyone saying that they print shit, on balance there is normally at least an element of truth.
We all get all upset if one of our boys is slagged off by the press and believe me I think OB is in the right place for a backlash in the not too distant future, but equally we all wanna see the pretty pictures - you can't have one without the other. The 'stars' need the press, court the press and if you dance with the devil you have to pay a price, there's no such thing as a free lunch guys!!!!
Any road up, I would be interested in other people's take on this! And btw, I want gut instincts, let's not get bogged down in what the law does or does not do!!!
Okay, The Sopranos is just on and I just watched Deadwood - surely they could've found Irish actors resident in the States, the accents were ... shite!!!!
Night y'all!
