A long talk with a senior officemate has ultimately made me realize several things; not that these things haven't crossed my mind before, but they became more clear now:
- since our editing unit is actually more of a 're-editing and quality check' unit, there really is no room for creativity. Hence, when it comes to promotions, we're based not on skill but on leadership.
- Leadership? Please. I'm a Leo, I was born to bitchslap people into submissiveness. But what I was never born to do is to kiss people's asses to please them. Especially if they're blithering idiots who obviously got to the top because they kissed asses themselves, but practically have zero leadership.
- another way to be promoted in our unit is to 'step up,' according to SO (senior officemate). Training them and assisting them in their work would be a good start. Which actually wouldn't be too hard for me, since the probies already think I'm a senior.
But then. But then. Another thought hit me. DO I ACTUALLY WANT TO BE PROMOTED?
Of course you do, people would say. Promotion is good, it has higher pay, etc etc. BUT. In my company, being promoted from a junior video editor to a senior doesn't actually give a significant raise to our salaries. Plus it would mean more kissing of asses, which I absolutely abhor. Sure, Leos are born leaders. But we're also lazy. I'm not going to put effort into something I don't really want. And if I'm going to be completely honest, the only reason I'd want to be promoted is because the others who came in much later than I did would be promoted before me.
Oh well. Decisions, decisions. At least I'm still getting paid. Office work is not my life. It's just a hobby I spend nine hours on five days a week.
