Me: so... we just an email from public safety about lantern safety
Luke: ?
Me: basically reminding us that when a lit candle is put inside our lanterns, they get really hot
Me: (lantern night is coming up)
Luke: lol
Me: listen to some of the things they tell us
Me: As seen in the infrared photo above, the top of the lantern gets hot - the ring at the top gets up to about 400 degrees F. Touch the ring at the top of the lit lantern, and you're entering a world of pain. It's important to keep the lantern well away from anything combustible, like paper or fabric, to keep it from igniting anything. By "anything combustible," we mean furniture, drapes, carpets, books, papers, clothing, flammable decorations, etc.
Luke: lol
Me: or, you know, anything luke and his roommates can set on fire
Luke: he he he he he
Luke: we can set ANYTHING on fire
Me: yup
Me: here's another good quote:
Me: Make sure your candle stays put in the holder inside the lantern. Secure the candle by dripping a little wax into the holder or packing some aluminum foil around the base of the candle. DON'T use anything combustible to do this.
Luke: ha ha ha ha
Me: erm... because putting kindling is a perfect thing to put in my holder!
Luke: I know right!
Me: or butane-soaked newspapers
Me: or tissues
Luke: lol
Luke: or cardboard
Luke: or well, anything
Luke: we lit our bathtub on fire the other day
Me: rofl
Me: how did you manage that?
Luke: lighter fluid!
Me: but isn't porcelain non-flammable?
Luke: ummmm maybe
Luke: but it took like half an hour to put the fire out
Me: lol
Me: oh, man. it's good you're not a bryn mawr student
Luke: oh?
Me: what with all the step sings, you would have burned the campus down long ago
Luke: yup
Me: thank you for being so amusing :)
Luke: :D
