By injecting quantum dots into tumors, investigators at Carnegie Mellon University have been able to image sentinel lymph nodes in animals using near-infrared light. These results could lead to a simple,
non-invasive method for detecting metastasis.
Quantum dots are already finding practical applications, and the process is non toxic. I have mixed feelings about such experiments, however, because in order to test the effectiveness of such methods, some living creature has to be the recipient of cancer. Although I'm excited about advances in quantum based technology, I couldn't personally participate in such experiments.
