"Without the explosions of supernovae, the heavy elements so essential to life itself would be unavailable, and stars would lack the raw materials to form planets."

This is still one realization that I find utterly amazing . . . and that's a good thing because I don't find many things that thrilling nowadays. Stars are enablers of life in the universe. And there are virtually a countless number of them.
