This week marked the start of a three week Easter break for uni. Yay! After nine straight weeks, everyone was kind of drained. Not that it'll be a real break as I have a briefing paper to write for my PG Cert teaching class plus a group project to do for that same class (oh joy of joys), plus meetings with my dissertation supervisor, and work.
Yes, work! I iz employed. I got a part-time job as a tutor at a learning centre for young kids. So about three times a week, I will have to pretend I enjoy working with children (like I said in my cover letter and in my interview) while secretly thinking of ways to murder half the characters of my novel. It's not exactly what I was looking for but it did hit the three important targets - paid, 20 hours a week or under, not retail/food service/office work not related to my field. So I'll get additional teaching experience, which will look good on the resume, and it's okay with them that I'm going to the States for four weeks this summer. So, I can't really complain. It's not going to be loads of money, so I still have to keep an eye on the ol' bank account but I should be able to keep eating and that's always good.
As for the novel, it's up to 69,000 words and I have the 40,000 for my next dissertation complete. Well, first draft complete. It still needs loads of work to make it acceptable, but at least the whole draft is there. I'm just writing until I end this thing now before I do any major editing. It looks like I should be able to hit my self-imposed 24 June deadline for first draft completeness, as long as I keep at it.
Also finished a short story that I'm quite proud of that I'm adapting into a screenplay for
culf. This will be my first adaptation, so it'll be fun to put my theories into practice.
Speaking of the evil twin, she's in Norway so I've been left on my lonesome. But I was quite proud of myself yesterday because I behaved liked a normal twenty-something person is apparently supposed to behave. After work training, I met two of my old publishing friends at a pub and was social! Just sat in a corner booth and sipped pints and talked about books and geeky things. That's what twenty-something professionals do after work, right? And, I even skipped watching The Apprentice (UK) so I could go. And I love the UK Apprentice.
There will be no going out tonight though because it is - OPENING DAY! Phillies versus Pirates. I already have my Phillies t-shirt on and will soon be donning my cap. It's an afternoon game, so I don't have to stay up ridiculously late to watch it, and for my birthday my mom let me buy the Apple A/V HDMI adapter so I can hook up my iPad to the TV and watch the game on TV. I used to use my computer for that, but it's gotten so old now that the MLB.TV streaming refuses to work on it anymore.
And now I'm off to finally go see The Woman in Black. I'm using the book in my dissertation, so I thought I could use the new Hammer film version, too. See, I'm doing work!
