I mostly talked about this with Ariel.
Hi, D&D.
Please don't let this be a judgment on you, and please don't hate me for it, but I'm breaking up with you.
When we started back in 2002, it was good. Really good. I played a ridiculous bard, a stupid paladin, even a wilder. (I did do some stupid things back in the day.) And if you want to call our mutual relationships with Baldur's Gate or the old AD&D 5.25" floppy games an actual relationship, those were great too. A nice mix between roleplaying and a healthy dose of power-leveling.
It used to be great, but now we're just going through the motions.
Your new self is just a bunch of flavorless abilities to kill mobs that don't have a lot of personality. That's right, they're not monsters, they're mobs. They don't even deserve to be called by their full name, "mobiles." They just abstractly float around until they land on a grid where they take 3d10 damage from a Vicious Strike from my spear fighter, or any variant thereof.
It's going to be healthy for both of us. You're there for escapism. There are a lot of disillusioned people out there for you to see, ones where you can take them into your own little world and ravish them. That's good. I hope they're there for you.
I've been cheating on you, D&D. I'm cheating on you for World of Shards.
You see, I've been doing some research, and I found that I can construct games that don't rely on breaking the game. Where how you use the skills is way more important than which skills you've acquired. Where combat resolution isn't the only thing that matters. Where figuring out puzzles hasn't been reduced to a set of skill challenges. And where I can start telling a motherfucking story again.
You don't care about my game world, D&D, but I do. So my game world and I are going to rock it, and you're going to suck it. World of Shards and I, we have a future. You and I...don't. You'll always be stuck in d20s.
It's okay. I doubt you'll miss me too much. But it was a good run. I'll see you on the flipside, maybe at a GenCon.
Take care,
--Taryn!
