So I was going on about how when you get married, your name doesn't legally change. You can use your married name, but to change it legally worried me. All the paper work. All the possible confusion for the American and Canadian governments. I was sending a friend the knot address and I realized I forgot about the nest, a sister site. So I looked at my calendar. If I HAD legally changed my name, this is ALL that would have had to be done:
- If you're changing your name, the first stop is your Social Security card -- same number, new name. Call the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213 or visit SSA.gov for details.
- Visit the DMV to change your name on your driver's license. Remember to bring along your existing license and a certified copy of your marriage license.
- Once you've changed your name with Social Security and the DMV, and you have your new ID cards, you'll have a whole mess of other places to hit. Check them off as you get each done.
- Update your name on your passport. For information on how, visit travel.state.gov.
- Update the name on your voter registration card. For information on how, visit eac.gov.
- Talk to HR about updating your employer's records and health insurance
- Update your credit cards, bank statements, and anything else with your name on it.
And I was moving to Canada right after. There was just no way.
