winslet beneath my wings

i have this image as one of my rotating desktop pics:

every two minutes she shows up.

on my 19" monitor her head is a little bigger than life-sized.

her expression, which at first was so wistful, a little sexy, has now become somewhat chiding.

"janxy, why are you on myspace? don't you have work to do?"

"janxy, stop blogging and balance your checkbook."

"janxy, darling, you don't have anyone to buy victoria's secret for, so stop looking at their website."

she says them all in her natty english accent.

she's become my nanny, the (good) angel on my shoulder. lately, she's kept me on the straight and narrow.

(the same look becomes approval when i am good.)

i live to please her now.

shucks to be you

so a guy on myspace who is a R&B musician sent me a bulletin about how he is in he john lennon songwriting competition and that i should go and vote for him. he'd won, he said, in the first round, but then this other guy won in the second round. so i went. the thing is, even though he is my "friend" (one of a handful of my friends on "The Space" i don't actually know), the other guy's song was better.

so i voted for the other guy.

and then, this being a tuesday morning, i decided i would listen to and vote for the others. (don't tell my boss, he would be PISSED.)

a few notes:

1) the songs in the "inspirational" category just blew. so did the one's in the "jazz" category.

2) i really liked BOTH of the country songs... which i am not supposed to because i have taken a strong stand against country music. (it's the culture. it's just so... dumb. which isn't really fair, since country music can be some of the cleverest stuff out there.)

3) writing a good children's song seems to be really hard. as well as a good folk song.

4) i am a whore for world music.

"oh! oh! does this has some middle eastern guy singing to a thumpin' beat?! i GOTTA have it!"

right now i am listening to gustavo santaolalla, he's the dude who did the brokeback mountain soundtrack. i really like his album "ronroco." it's more world-music-y. great to draw to, and to drink tequila shots out of the belly buttons of young brazilian women... but that's almost ANY music really.

(kate just rolled her eyes.)
