Before I start on today's whinge, here is an open invitation to anyone out there. I'm going to be having a "first day back at uni perve fest" on Monday. I might even get some deck chairs, some beers, and some munchies, and I'm going to spend all day, from 9 o'clock till late just looking at the first years running around. If you have lectures, skip them. If you work, take a sickie. I garantee that you will not find a better group of people to perv on. And if you can't get a date on the first week of school (hereafter called "fuck a fresher week"), then you are in dire straits.
From the above, it should come as no surprise that I went to o-week today. For those out of the loop, it is orientation day, where every yahoo with an agenda tries to get five dollars from you to join their society. There is a society for everything, it seems. The classic example of this is the BUFFY society. Surely there is no greater example of the frivolity of these things than having a discontinued television show gathering an amazing number of new recruits.
Some of the other amusing societies I found in my travels where the "Dark arts society", or something to that affect. Really, they should just re-name themselves to "Goth-R-us", and it would give pretty much the same effect. A whole bunch of dweebie looking goths were there. I like goths, don't get me wrong (some of my best friends are goths... hahahhahaa.. now isnt' that the precurser to something derogatory?). There is just... well, something bizarre about having a goth society. Not unlike having a Buffy society. For all that joins goths together (very little, from my experience), the only universal fact is their aethetic. I wonder if I can form a simliar group, something like "preppy guys trying to look Versace on a Kmart budget" society. Funnily enough, these goths did not look quite as pathetic as they sounded; after all, they were in good company.
I joined a couple of things. Circus society, which do juggling and what not. I went in for the firetwirling; although they might give me some good busking skills to improve on my Art hisotry Honours.
Also joined "Salsa Sus", a group of white kids pretending to be Latinos. I think it is going to be great! I gladly handed over the money, becuase I can tell their functions are going to be another host of those "wait a second.... you pivot turn, shuffle and THEN dip, not shuffle, spin, spin dip, DUMB ASS". I love people that learn to dance from the intermenetnet.
Lastly, I joined Tharts (Theory and Hisotry of Arts), purely because I felt that needed to show my loyalty to the cause. I even bough a shirt from them, that is how good I was. So, a fair bit of money later, I've joined these clubs, and they will do nothing at all during the year. Buffy soc will have two trivia nights, tharts will have a photo competition, and salsa are going to have "buy your own drinks at manning" nights. I love uni.
Seriously, sorry to those people I haven't kept in contact with. Getting the energy to actually talk to people is kinda hard at the moment, though I have my days. I managed to be charming to everyone around me in the stalls, if only briefly and forced. Oh well.
I can't wait for uni to start. I just hope that I get some challenging subjects, something taht makes me think. I'm tired of having a blank mind all the time. I know plenty of people that would like that, but I can't stand it. I think that one of the best days I had this hoidays was talkign to Daniel-san about his thesis. Just gettting the brain working was fabulous. Sure, I probably only spouted shit, but it was shit that came from a thought process. I like thinking, even if I'm not good at it, it gives me something to... well... think about (boom tish).
