Sid is worried it'll be awkward at first, and he takes up time lining his shoes perfectly against the wall while he tries to think of what to say. It's never been hard with Jack, and it's weird that it feels so uncomfortable now.
And then Jack's phone rings, because his mother is the best worrier, and Jack rolls his eyes and takes the call. Sid smiles, because that's familiar.
So is Jack's phone.
Sid waits patiently for the call to finish, because his mother raised him to be polite, but he snatches the cell phone out of Jack's hands as soon as he hears the disconnect.
"Sid, what--" but Jack must realize, because he freezes, folds in on himself a little.
And Sid is just staring down at the 87 sticker that is still on Jack's phone, two years later and just after high school.
It gives him the ability to say, "I missed you."
"Don't make me say it back," Jack groans, but he's smiling like an idiot into his pillow. "I think you already know."
And Sid is way too old to have a high school sweetheart, but--Jack would make a really great one.
