“Checkmate.” The young woman’s solemn eyes were warm with triumph.

Septimus Weasley gazed at the board. He scowled, a bit put out for a moment, then gave his opponent a lopsided grin. “By Merlin, so you did!” He held out a freckled hand to shake hers, but at the last minute pulled her into a warm hug.

“She finally got you, Shep!” his best mate crowed above the applause and cheers that rocked Gryffindor Tower. Backs were slapped and Galleons were exchanged around the crowded common room.

“Yeah, like you’ve ever beaten me, Potter!”

“Naah, not even in the same league as you two.”

“You’ve been coaching me for nearly seven years; I was bound to catch on eventually,” the young woman pointed out. “Want to redeem yourself? Best two out of three?”

“You’re on!” Shep set up the board for another game.

“Checkmate!” the boy called out. “I did it! I did it!”

Shep shook his grandson’s hand. “Good job, mate!”

“Has anyone else ever beaten you?”

“Your dad and Bill have come close, Percy’s pretty good but his moves are too predictable. Only one other person’s ever checkmated me. A long time ago, back at Hogwarts.”

“Will I ever meet him?” Bright blue eyes gazed at him, a mirror of his own.

“Oh, no doubt you will. SHE will be one of your professors when you get to Hogwarts. In fact she’ll probably be your head of house.”

“Do you think I could beat her?” Ronnie bounced in his chair.

“Now that would be an interesting match.”
