"Hyukjae," Donghae whined. "Are you coming anytime soon?" he was
pacing in front of me looking quite troubled over something. He had his
hands stuck to his sides and he kept putting them in and out of his
pockets.
I looked up from the newspaper I was holding. I was reading the
classifieds trying to understand the small letters. I folded it up and
put it under my arm as I got up from the bench I had been sitting on.
"Why are you in such a hurry to go?" I asked, walking beside him now.
"Because, if we’re late I’m afraid Jaejoong might give someone else his
new cookie crumble to taste first." he said skipping slightly. He
really was impatient.
"He won't," I assured him. Jaejoong was an owner of a bakery called
'This wonderful life'. He owned it with his husband Yunho. Donghae had
been friends with Yunho since they were younger and he had fallen in
love with Jaejoong as soon a he tried some of his wonderful baking.
Now all Donghae ate were treats from their newly opened bakery. He'd
even begged them to open it somewhere near by so that he could stop by
often.
"Aren’t we supposed to be looking for an apartment?" I asked. "Not
eating cookie crumble."
"That can wait." he said taking my hand and enlacing our fingers. "I’m
really hungry. Aren't you hyung?"
I laughed. The only time he ever called me hyung was when he was
trying to sweet talk me. I rolled my eyes and squeezed his hand
slightly. "Why are you so difficult sometimes?" I asked.
"I’m not difficult," he pouted. We were walking on the sidewalk. The
bakery wasn't too far away. This boy obviously needed some sugar.
"Whatever you say dear." I said but still wasn't able to leave the
subject alone. "But we really need to find a place to stay. You heard
what our landlord said. He's giving us two weeks. If were not gone by
then we’re on the streets. Do you want to sleep on the-"
He cut me off by giving me a quick kiss. I pulled away. Why was he
always like this?
"You worry over such unimportant things sometimes Hyukie." he said
walking faster now.
'Right and you worry over things like cookie crumble' I thought but
didn't say. "How is knowing where we are going to live for hopefully
the rest of our lives unimportant?" I asked.
He sighed and gave me that dreamy smile of his. "What?" I asked.
"Nothing. You just confessed you want to live with me for the rest of
your life. Now you can't get rid of me" he said grinning from ear to
ear.
I rolled my eyes. We were now on the street where the bakery was and
Donghae had already started salivating.
He practically ran, dragging me behind him, trough the door and into
the bakery. We were greeted at once with Jaejoong’s bright smile. He
beckoned us over as he finished talking to a customer. Donghae almost
pushed the customer over so that he could get to Jaejoong.
"So do you have it?" Donghae asked eagerly.
"Quiet down." I said "You sound like your asking about drugs and not
cookie crumble."
At that Jaejoong laughed. "Oh Hyukjae, I see you still like to treat
Donghae like a child. You remind me so much of my Yunho."
"Who said my name?" Yunho came out from the back. He had an apron on
that said "I am the banana king" with a big sundae under it. He came
over to Jaejoong and planted a kiss on his cheek.
Donghae giggled and when Yunho raised his eyebrow at him he pointed to
his apron still smiling. Yunho smiled and put an arm around Jae's waist.
"I got it as a present." he explained. He cupped Jaejoong’s face, "This
little jewel got it for me."
Donghae smiled at them showing all his teeth. Donghae always admired
Yunho & Jaejoong’s relationship. He had said once that he wanted to be
the perfect husband and I could be his little wife. I had laughed at
the idea but deep down I wanted that too. Except without the part
where I was his "little wife", that just sounded wrong.
Jaejoong then turned to Donghae as he looked at him expectantly.
Jaejoong clapped his hands together. "Oh right, the stuff." he said
with a wink.
I rolled my eyes at both of them and Yunho looked confused as Jaejoong
walked through the curtain and into the back of the bakery.
Donghae could barely contain himself when Jaejoong came out with a
square box that said "This wonderful life" and was red and white. He
looked so cute as he bit his lip.
"Here you go," Jaejoong said handing the box to Donghae. He took it
and smiled. He began to look for his wallet when Jaejoong waved his
hands.
"Don’t worry. It's on the house."
"Really?" he asked smiling brightly. He looked at the box. It was
pretty big. "No, I can't just take this. I really feel like I should
give you something." He had this worried expression on his face. How
could a 23 year old man be so adorable?
Jaejoong shook his head, "Enjoy it and give me your honest critique.
That's enough for me." he said.
Donghae and I sat down at a table by one of the windows. You could see
people walking through the streets going about their days. I wondered
if any of them were as happy as I was.
Donghae took my hand and squeezed my pinky. He loved to do this for
some reason, just randomly squeeze one of my fingers. I used to think
it was weird but now it was a very cute gesture I adored about him. He
began eating his cookie crumble. Before that moment I didn't know what
cookie crumble even was. But as I looked at Donghae eating some it
looked delicious.
He picked up his spoon and took it to my mouth. "Want some?" he asked.
I nodded and closed my eyes expecting a warm feeling in my mouth.
Instead, nothing happened. When I opened my eyes I saw him eating the
spoonful. He laughed and then stuck out his tongue at me.
Typical Donghae (little boy) behavior.
He pouted as I sneered at him. "Aww is Hyukie mad at me?" he asked.
"Here, have some, really."
I opened my mouth again and just as the spoon reached my lips he
snatched it away eating it instead. He laughed again and I sent
fireballs to his head with my eyes. He just kept laughing. I took the
spoon out of his hand and took some cookie crumble from the box and
ate it. He kept laughing even as I leaned back in my chair and folded
my arms over my chest, chewing with my mouth open.
"Oh please it wasn't that funny." I said.
"Yes it was. You should have seen your face." He said, still laughing.
I rolled my eyes and puffed out a breath.
"Oh come on," he said "Don’t be a baby, I'm sorry." he put his hand on
my arm and stroked it. He curled his fingers around my arm and pulled
my arms apart. He took my hand and kissed it.
"How can you put "Don’t be a baby" and "I'm sorry" in the same
sentence?" I asked. I didn't pull my hand away though.
He smiled weakly. "I’m sorry your a cry baby. See I just did it again.
It's easy." he giggled.
I ran my free hand through my hair and sighed impatiently. He was
always managing to get me rallied up over little things. How could this
relationship make sense?
"Are we normal?" I asked.
"What do you mean?" he asked taking the spoon and eating some more
crumble. He closed his eyes as he chewed. Some bits stuck to the
corners of his mouth. I took a napkin and wiped them away. I thought
about what Jaejoong said about me treating Donghae like a child.
"Do you think I treat you like a kid?" I asked.
"I am a kid." He said smiling. He licked his lips and kept eating. He
was so unaware of the people around him. When I first met Donghae it
didn't take me long to realize that whenever I was with him the whole
world disappeared around us. He somehow managed to block everyone out.
I don't know how he did it. How he was just able to forget there where
more people in the world besides him and myself. That's why when I
heard a crash come from a nearby table I jumped so surprised of the
noise. Donghae reacted quickly and got up from his chair to help the
woman who was picking up what her baby had thrown on the floor. Cake
was all over the floor and Donghae had a bunch of napkins in his hand.
I don't know whether I was just extremely slow that day but I didn't
think about moving. Instead I watched as Jaejoong hurried over and
began cleaning with a broom. I saw as the baby began crying. 'Why are
you crying?' I thought as I looked at the baby's red face and how
Donghae gently stroked it, cooing at the baby. 'Your the one who
threw the damn cake.' Donghae then offered to pay for another cake for
the baby but the mother politely declined. He insisted, saying he
couldn't watch a baby cry the way her son was doing. She finally gave in, as
most people did with Donghae, and let him buy another cake for the
whiny baby.
I couldn't help but smile at my silly boyfriend. Not only had he
cleaned a mess that wasn't his, he was also buying sweets for a baby
he didn't even know.
He took the baby out of his stroller and carried him over to the
display windows where there were many cakes and cookies of different
shapes and colors. He let the baby decide and he wiggled him as he
squirmed in his arms with excitement. After paying for the cake he took
the baby back to his mother and she thanked him saying she’d never met
such a kind and wonderful young man. That was my Donghae, I thought
with pride, kind and wonderful.
He sat back down, still looking at the baby with a big smile on his
beautiful face. "I want a baby just like that."
I looked back at the baby as he ate happily on his mother’s lap. "You
mean you want a baby that will make a mess in public and attract
attention all the time?" I asked. "Wonderful. You’re taking care of it
whenever he gets that way. I won't want a whining, fussy baby on my
lap."
Donghae smiled at me and pushed his chair closer to mine. He put both
his hands on my lap and kissed me, forgetting once again the world
existed. "I want a baby that will be perfect. I want a little you."
I couldn't help but blush, "What if he looks like a monkey just like I
do?"
"He'll be beautiful. But I insist he have my hair. No offense Hyuk but
yours get tangled too easily."
"Well if you kept your sticky fingers out of it once in a while that
wouldn't happen." I said with a wink.
He planted a kiss on my lips and it was sweet, he tasted like apples
and cookie crumble.
"Were did you get apples from?" I asked silently, playing with his
earlobe.
He pointed over my shoulder and looked at the floor. I quickly rubbed my
mouth, "Ahh gross Donghae. You ate from the floor?"
He laughed and rolled his eyes. I absolutely loved his laugh. "I was
joking. I ate from the baby's apple struddle."
I sighed and kissed him again. "You’re right. You are a kid." I put my
head on his chest and listened to his heartbeat for a while. He put
his hand on my back and massaged it lightly.
"Yah," Yunho called out. "You two, get a room. This is a family bakery."
he smiled at us.
I grabbed Donghae's hand. "We'll go do that then." I said pulling him
with me out of the bakery.
"Really?" he said, looking at me hopefully.
"No, we’re going to go look at apartments. You perv." I said smirking
at his now sad face.
Before he could have a little tantrum on the street I cupped his ear
and whispered, "I promise that once we finish looking at potential
places we can go back to our apartment and make the landlord regret
him throwing us out."
"How will we do that?" he asked innocently.
"We'll just do some remodeling in our bedroom." I said winking at him
as he finally caught on.
"Oh then we better hurry and look at those apartments cause I'm really
in the mood for remodeling." he said pulling at my hand as he
practically ran down the street.
I laughed as I looked at my wonderful, kind, impatient boyfriend. He
sure was silly, but he was mine and I wouldn't want it any other way.
