In a corner of the DRT room sat a boy. He was watching everyone but at the same time, simply staring out into space. So, this was it? He knew he had to go to his own dimension to take care of his students and resume his job. He was glad that they could put him back in the same time and place. Who knew what would have happened if his students had wound up in the magical world with out him.

He was looking forward to seeing everyone again. On the same token though, he was thinking of all the people he would miss. His time here had been great on some accounts (giant monsters and crabs aside). He was going to miss them.

Negi wasn't sure if he was ready to say goodbye to them just yet. He felt like maybe he could just let time stretch out if he sat away from it all. Of course, all ready in his mind he was going over various theories he had crossed about other dimensions. Surely it was possible?

The small boy pulled his staff closer, looking more thoughtful than sad.

There was one boy Harry definitely needed to see. After all, when one was violating the fundamental laws of the universe itself, it helped to have a accomplice working on the other side.

"Say, Negi there you are. I wanted to bounce an idea off you."

Negi looked up. Honestly, he'd wanted to speak to Harry as well, but he'd also known that there was a lot of people Harry probably wanted to see and talk to.

"Really? About what?" He had a hunch, but he wanted to hear what Harry had to say.

"I'd like to hear your theories on magical gateways and the potential of interdimensional travel. I heard you mention something about a magical world?"

Yeah, like hell Harry was giving up this easily.

"Ah, well, the magical world is separate from the normal world where I'm from. I don't know much about how the gates work, but I do know it's a very powerful and old magic...and there's only certain points you can access it from...but I think that's more for security and ease than anything else," Negi explained.

He was smiling slightly because Harry was clearly on the same brain wave as him. "I was actually planning to look into it in more detail when I returned home. I remember coming across some written theories about it in my studies, but I never really read much about them." That would change quickly. "You're...going to look into it too, right Harry? I'd be very happy to learn more about magic in your world and others...as well as seeing everyone again of course."

Harry nodded with a grin, seeing the boy was already on the same page. "I knew I could count on you Negi. Back home we also have a tradition of traveling between realities, heck we even have a man who's job is to watch over magical gates. I've also got contacts within other supernatural organizations like the fairy courts who have even more experience walking between worlds, and who know paths I can't even imagine. All these people owe me, and I'm going to collect."

Nodding, Harry said, "We should trade notes now, and then when we get home we can both attack the problem from our own side. Between the resources of two magical worlds, I know we can pull it off."

He could do it, he knew it.

Negi nodded. He didn't have any real connections that he could think of. Perhaps some of the things he had learned about Chao's time travel device could be put to use as well. Still, there was so much out there he didn't know about magic. He would certainly be focusing his studies as soon as he was able to.

"I'm not sure what I can tell you about how travel works between the magic world and the normal world. I never thought much about it before. I do think I remember reading one theory when I was in magic school about ley lines connecting not just magical concentration points in our world, but to other worlds as well."

That idea intrigued Harry, and rubbing his chin he mused, "We have ley lines back home as well, and they have a strong resonance in both the real world and the Nevernever. Maybe we can use that to our advantage."

Negi nodded, he had a feeling that would be the case. "I have a feeling that worlds with similar laws might be easier to access, especially if we use the ley lines. Although, I would imagine there are ways around that as well."

"Harry, if you discover the answer before I do, will you try to get to my world and share it?" He had a feeling what Harry's answer would be, but he felt he should ask regardless.

"Yes, and once we can tap the knowledge of several worlds, we'll be able to come up with ideas we never even could have dreamed of before," Harry agreed, visibly excited by the possibilities. Certainly there would be a lot of work ahead of them, but for now it was hope, and that's what he needed most.

"Of course Negi," Harry replied with a grin. "I never would have made it this far without you.

"Thanks Harry, I learned a lot from you."

Negi was getting excited too. There were so many possibilities. Still, there was something that was bugging him and it was then that he remembered. "Oh! That's right! If we're being sent back to the time before we arrived in Manhattan that means I'll be in the magic world."

He looked up at Harry, "I'm not sure what I can find their, but if anywhere will have information like that, I know it's the magic world. I guess I'll have to do that while I'm looking for my father." He rubbed the back of his head. He wasn't sure how he was going to explain to Asuna and the others what his new mission was.

At least Kaede would know what he was talking about.

"Hey, the exchange was mutual."

"Magical world, huh?" Negi had mentioned it in passing a few times, and from what Harry could gather it was an alternate reality, though one very different from the Nevernever back home. "Well, if we're going to find a way to travel between worlds, then that is probably a pretty good place to start." He just hoped the authorities where Negi came from would be more helpful than his own.

Harry was drawn from his musings when Negi mentioned the actual reason for his mission. In truth Negi had never really talked much about his past, though Harry had given occasional thought to just how exactly a ten year old had gotten hold of the kind of magical talent. Now he wished he'd been more inquisitive. "Your father?"

Negi nodded, he'd never been to the other world before, so most of what he knew about it came from books and other mages. He probably could have found information about dimensional travel at the Mahora Academy library, but he wasn't going to be back there until Summer vacation was over.

He hadn't meant to keep Harry in the dark about his mission, Negi just wasn't the type to talk about his past. "Yes. I've always believed he was still alive but I haven't had any clue to his whereabouts until recently." Negi looked down at the staff he had finally gotten back. His hand tightened around it, "It's a decision I made before I ever got brought here...and I pulled in a lot of my students into it...so I can't back down now." The last part was mostly him talking aloud than telling Harry, but it just came out.

Harry listened to Negi, and his heart ached for the boy. He knew the loneliness of growing up without you parents, of always wondering what they were like, if they would have been proud of him, how different things would have been if they had lived. If he'd had a chance to find his mother, he would have likely jumped at it.

"For what it's worth Negi? I think your father would be proud of you."

Harry's word meant a lot to Negi and he smiled at the older wizard. "I've been following in his footsteps ever since that day he saved our village," Negi admitted. Thinking of that day and how far he'd come...it was sort of amazing. Negi knew he still had a long way to go.

"Next time I see you Harry, I'm sure I'll know a lot more spells that we can share, too."

Harry nodded. "Just, don't forget to forge your own path to Negi. One thing I can tell you based on my week of potential fatherhood, is that fathers hope their children make their own lives, rather than repeat the mistakes of their parents."

He grinned at Negi's promise, and ruffled the kids hair. "Negi, by the time we next meet I wouldn't be surprised if you were far more powerful than me. I'll do my best to try and keep up."
