In his other pocket, though, was a radio. No matter how much it hurt and how weak he could feel himself becoming, he reached his hand in and pulled it out. He was barely able to hold it up to his face and push the button with the side of his hand.
"Ayudame," he muttered into the radio. "Somebody help me. Michelangelo Hotel. It's Luis ( ... )

Maria had no clear memory between hearing Luis' radio transmission and rushing down the crumbled pavement, stamping her shaking legs, every inch of her screaming to just keep going when there was so little of her left for anything.
The sudden jolt that pushed through her silenced the crippling sense she'd had of being beaten against a brick wall. There was nothing else she could do but just-- be there, and more than anything she knew what that would mean for Luis. But not knowing would have made it hurt worse, wouldn't it now, little whore?
She wasn't even so much as conscious of her travelling time, or what streets she'd been on. All she could think to do was fling herself at the hotel's doors, muttering more pointless begging as she exploded into the lobby.

He was in the process of weakly trying to undo the buttons of his shirt with one hand (the shot in his shoulder made his whole right arm go numb, and he couldn't move it) when he heard the sound of something from the lobby. He immediately perked up and tried to raise his voice, but that didn't work so well either.
"S-somebody there?"

...nor was she in a state able to handle that much blood.
Struggling for words- any words at all- she absently clawed at the wall for support as she lurched and cringed and collapsed on the floor by him, the tiles biting her kneecaps.
She fixed her gaze on his face- that was what made sense, it was the only thing that did. There, he was smirking, and breathing, and sticking it to his reapers-- and still with her.

Not that it was possible to fool anyone. His hand clutched a wound gushing blood and his shirt and the carpet were stained with it. The buttons were half undone, still barely concealing a clean hole or two through the skin.
"Hola, cariña," Luis said hoarsely. "Good to see you. You wouldn't happen to have a smoke, would you? Th-that'd be perfect."

"h- How're you doing?" she choked finally. Her eyes slipped downwards to his shirt. It was half-unbuttoned and she could see all that gushing, fresh blood right from the source, soaking everything nearby.
Silly girl...she already knew the answer.

He winced in pain and said a few nasty words under his breath. "I'm such an idiot. Had it c-coming..."

Maria tried desperately to try and actually mean something. She wanted to put her hands on him, but couldn't decide where it would hurt the least, and settled for stupidly clenching them in each other, fighting and failing to stop their trembling.
She managed weakly,
"You didn't deserve this. I know that."

Luis smiled at her a little cynically. "I'm not a good man. I'm not worth crying over, bonita."

"Look, I've seen lots bad people." she insisted. Afraid of breaking what was left of herself if she pushed anymore, her voice was low.
"Dealing with them was...what my life was for...I only escaped that because..."
No...no, she couldn't. He would just laugh at her. It wasn't that she was scared or ashamed of him hearing it- more that she didn't want to see him choke on what was left of his breath again.

"Because what?" he asked softly.

"Because..." she navigated her words clumsily, "...I guess because I had a reason to walk out of the church every now and then."
Staring right back at his face, she tried another smile, giving him a better look: she thought it was something he really did deserve, anyway. It was a little less painful- she was sure that was something he'd always brought out in her.

"That's quite the compliment. I knew you were something special, cariña," he murmured. "More than worth the trouble... heh, my favorite kind of trouble."
He paused for a second and his teeth gritted together in pain again. "Shit. I'm not making much sense, am I?"

She sucked in a quiet and ragged breath of air. The scent of blood came along, smothering. An absent part of her was a little surprised that she'd actually held herself together so far.
"El apuro le adula, hermoso." she managed weakly. The fact she got it out at all was something of a marvel to herself.

God, this was taking forever and it was making him feel sicker and sicker by the minute. Why did it have to be her? Why did she have to be here, now? Luis Sera didn't deserve that kind of pleasantries even if he was about to shed his mortal coil. It was better last time, bleeding to death on a hard stone floor, punished properly for what he'd done.
It was kind of funny to be dying and yet more concerned for the other person. "Listen, Maria... Thank you. For all your help. The vaccine... hopefully is going to save a lot of lives," he said.

But she knew she couldn't have stopped what had happened to him, even if she'd had the power, or a clue how.
And suddenly, she wondered: was this how James felt? Watching pain swallow people, and fearing the knowledge that the only relief was the ultimate silence?
Balancing herself on her knees to keep her weight off him, Maria placed her fingertips on his hands and gently kissed his forehead. Luis wasn't alone- not in this moment, and not where ever he would be next. She, like so many visitors to her hometown, would be powerless as to where he would go next- but for the next few minutes, she knew nobody could touch him, or break him.
She could do that for him.
