Croix wished he had more cigarettes. He had been really good rationing them lately, but the aftermath of Prier's little "question" period pretty much left him to finish off his already started pack in record time
( ... )
Maybe she'd ended up falling asleep for a bit, but the knock at the door stirred her enough awake, that she rolled over, looking at the door. It looked unlocked so she just rolled back over again, deciding to be lazy.
"It's open!" Prier called, sounding a bit even like she'd been asleep.
Only people who ever came to see her were the few people she knew. So... Croix? Or maaaaybe Flute. More likely Croix. Wait. Could it be Croix?
Oh why couldn't she just get up and get the door? It would make it really easier here. Still... "It's me," Croix said nonchalantly before actually coming in.
... and then the silence set in. Great, just great.
"Look, about what happened there--" he started, unsure of just HOW to finish it.
Given she'd figured she'd really pissed him off, she hadn't been sure he'd come talk to her any time soon, so she was a little surprised it was him. Although, she wasn't sure she was ready to face him.
Thus came the long silence, till he broke it. Sort of.
Pushing herself into a sitting position, she became rather interested in the bedspread, keeping her gaze diverted. "...I'm sorry. You can just forget about it, alright?" she offered.
Croix wasn't as ticked as he was back during the message exchange, but he was still mad just enough not to turn it around by being a jerk about how strange she was acting. That would result in a nasty punch in the eyes, and everything would turn back to normal. However, just looking at Prier was enough to know that she was feeling horrible about the whole thing.
'Forget about it'... that sounded good enough, not that it would actually explain just what caused this in the first place. And honestly, Croix was curious about the whole thing. "This isn't going to get us anywhere. Just... what's going on, Prier?" In the end, might just as well ask.
She remained silent for several long moments, as she tried to figure out how to answer. In the end, old habits won.
"It's nothing. Really. ...Maybe this place is just getting to me, heh," she replied, with a strained laugh and a shrug.
It wasn't exactly untrue. She'd been here even longer than Croix had and while Prier had been trying to remain optimistic, it was getting tougher each passing day. She missed Paprika terribly and all her friends, and especially Culotte. Sure, she'd made some new friends here, and one day she'd miss them, but it wasn't enough to ease the increasing homesickness.
She didn't know how she'd be feeling now if Croix wasn't here.
Croix glanced at her from above his glasses. "You're a terrible liar, Prier," he stated, not exactly expecting a follow up. This was Prier after all, he knew how she acted. But, he did know that she only acted like that when it was something that really weighted on her mind.
"But I think it's all getting to us, especially now," he trailed off, mostly to himself.
Other than a momentary glare in Croix's direction, she said nothing to his first comment. Even Prier had a feeling it was a little too obvious. She did not, however, make any move to explain what was bothering her still. He hadn't asked again, after all.
"...Yeah," she said quietly, agreeing. She was undoubtedly not the only one feeling this way. In fact, there were probably people feeling it even worse than her. At least here she had someone; some people didn't even have that much. She was pretty lucky in that regard.
"It's not a bad thing you know," Croix answered as she glared, looking away. He pondered pressing her, but nothing good ever came out of that, so he remained silent for the moment.
It was rather strange, seeing Prier vulnerable like this. Then again, telling her about the whole people wanting to kill them all and everything the other probably wouldn't haven't put anyone in their bests of moods... though to be honest, that's usually what gets Prier all fired up, not... like this.
So this was really about this relationship thing, huh? "Look," he said, mumbling along the way. "Sorry if I was being distant lately." It had to come out eventually, might as well get that over with... though, he had to admit, he wasn't exactly telling the whole story here. Unlike Prier though, he could generally hide it a bit better than her.
"You've been busy, so... whatever," she replied quietly, once more attempting to brush the subject off. The way he was mumbling, it obviously wasn't something he really wanted to talk about. Although, it was odd that he was trying. But, whatever. He had been gone a lot lately. ...Although, he had seemed kind of distant, now that she thought about it.
Maybe that was the problem. The sense of... mixed signals or something.
"You know how it never stops around here," he shrugged off. That was true, he was pretty much day in day out, trying to kill as much of those things as he could. It wasn't much, but he was still trying to help as much as he could. It still wasn't enough though, not for the city, or for himself... though he had a feeling that it would never be enough for that last one.
Which was, in turn exactly why he was being distant in the first place. He really wanted to be with Prier, and that would never change. But right now, he didn't deserve any of this so...
Prier really hated these awkward situations, something they'd been getting into a lot here. It wasn't like back home where she could turn around and concentrate on a mission or ask Culotte about doing her laundry or... anything. It was just her and him. It really couldn't get any more awkward than this.
The silence didn't bother him much, mostly because he was still stuck in his reflexions. If he had been angry just earlier, it was gone now. She looked miserable, and he was just wondering just how much of this was his fault. Heh, he couldn't remember the last time things have been so awkward.
"You were sleeping, right?" he said, shrugging it off. "You probably want to go back, I'll be going." Seemed like the best time to do so.
"Only sort of. I wasn't really trying to," she interjected, a bit sad to leave things like this, but not exactly sure what to even begin to do to fix it. This relationship stuff was really tough. Was it always this hard?
"But... if you want to go... I guess I'll see you later, or something," Prier added quickly.
Croix remained silent for a few more moments before nodding. "I see, I guess I'll see you later then," he answered, a bit oblivious to the whole fact that Prier seemed to still want him around. Anyway, right now, sleep sounded good for him too, even if he had the feeling he'd only be staring at the ceiling for three hours straight.
"... door is unlocked," he said just as he was letting himself out.
