"I'll say," MacGyver muttered grimly, looking over the files. There was data on so many people...and how'd they get that photo of him? All he could say was that this was damning evidence. Whatever speculations they had could be put to rest. This wasn't a social experiment.

It was a weapons development program.

"Bill, I'll tell you something. I always thought that nuclear weapons were the worst people were going to come up with. Always thought that there'd be some wall of human decency stopping us, like poisoning the earth and blowing it up was the worst we'd allow ourselves to do. I guess in terms of scale, this'd be a step down, but...well, yeah. They're weaponizing people without their consent, and that black box is a remote control like we figured."

On top of that, there was the dim ache in the back of his mind that was asking about exactly how this DFT whatever they had worked, but that wasn't important at the moment.

Weapons. God.

Mac shook his head, his hand around his forehead as if to ward off a headache. There was no cure for it, however.

"Who says all the people behind this are human?" Growling, Kang walked over to the two men, tail still lashing behind him. "I know, I know, your worlds, there aren't other races; but, they're pulling people from other... dimensions. Hell, for all I know, there could be a god involved."

...huh, now that was interesting. Pointing at the computer screen with a claw, "Take a look at the subjects listed as 'DRT Malfunction (Lost).' Everyone listed as such are people that have gone missing. And... there's a few listed as 'Present (Reclaimed).' That's got to mean something."

Zidane was one of them. Something about that name got the bozak thinking.

"...if I remember right, this Zidane went missing, and came back recently, saying he'd gone home." He went into the S folder, bringing up Slith's file.

It listed him as "Present."

Well, shit. That hope was dashed.

"I'm with you, Mac. I don't say it much, but this sucks," Bill said with a grimace. "This is some really ugly stuff, though I think I get the strategic appeal here. Develop the ability to make huge enemies from the citizens of whatever country you want rid of and unleash it, then feign ignorance," Bill speculated, grimly. "Still doesn't explain why they're dragging in people with all these weird powers from other worlds. Seems like overdoing it, somehow."

He listened to Kang's theory and considered it.

"Hey yeah, that's weird that it would be inconsistent like that," he started and paused for a tiny moment to stare when he turned around to face Kang. He'd seen the draconian around before and talked to him on the network but it was still a little hard to get used to, having not talked much face to face. He composed himself again quickly enough, however, and went back to flipping through individual files.

"Hey, they've got you marked as a 'societal risk,' Mac, that's practically a badge of honor," he said with a smirk, but something else quickly caught his attention.

"Woah, I think I just found the first guy to be made into a monster. Herb Johnson," he pointed at the screen and kept searching for more. "And here's Andrew Basil, the most recent one," he continued searching.

"That's weird, I can't find another completed subject here. Maybe I just overlooked it," he finally said, disappointed.

Mac's search through the files were accompanied by thoughtful keystroke taps, trying to distill some sense from the terms used. Seemed like they should be simple enough, but maybe not. Code terms, acronyms...hell, DXS used him as a field agent, not a think tank.

Of all the things to not have done in his life, detective had to be the one that mattered most at the moment.

Still, he liked challenge, and he wasn't exactly a newborn as far as this sort of cloak-and-dagger stuff went. Maybe he could figure something out. The puzzle in front of him had his attention for sure, such that he almost missed Bill's remark.

"Huh?" he blinked, cycling back to his photo. "...Hey, yeah! That's pretty cool, actually. Though..."

He paged back to Bill's photo, patting the real deal on the back. "Don't worry, Bill, I'm sure you can get 'em worried just as well."

The moment of levity, while welcome, was also brief. There was a lot of stuff that needed sifting through, and Kang couldn't take care of all the theorizing. Mac resumed paging through the subjects, trying to sift out meaning.

C'mon...

What about-

"...What about this DRT thing? Seems to be implying that there's some sort of upkeep required to keep us here. Whenever someone disappears, it notes 'em as 'lost' due to some kind of failure. If we can stop that, whatever field they have going might destabilize and we'll snap back to wherever we came from. Considerin' the bit in that report about wiping us out if they don't have one hundred Big Mommas around, we'd probably wanna get on that real quick."

"They might have been hoping that certain physical traits and abilities carried over; my world for example, snatching the most powerful mage to ever walk the face of Krynn, and two from a race that typically has wings. I don't know about you, but frankly, I'm terrified by the thought of one of those creatures being able to fly or cast spells," Kang snorted, wings shifting restlessly.

He did notice that there were no notes on his own file. Even with effectively being in command during the attack on Central Park, and his assistance on Roosevelt Island, he'd managed to stay off their radar. Raiel and Harry, though... and all of the healers, they were going to need extra protection.

"We'll have to make sure they can't just rebuild one and start their little project over again after we destroy it."

"That's a real scary thought, Kang. Must really grind their gears every time someone gets bit and then healed. I don't think they adequately took into account the variable of an organism's desire to survive," Bill said, finding himself feeling proud of their little community, such as it was. All of this effort trying to turn them all into monsters and almost no one was going to put up with it. He'd call it human nature, but it was bigger than that. Sentient nature? Maybe he could think of a better name for it later.

"But what is the DRT thing? And where would it be? Any clues on that in here?" Bill asked.

"Life finds a way, Bill. That's how it goes," Mac smiled, his eyes on the table as he tried to puzzle out some other info that would help them. Coordinates...well, it's not like they were saying where the DRT thing was...

"First we've gotta find it, then we can decide how to stop 'em from making another one. Lemme think...there're those CFP folks who tried talkin' to us. They told us to search various places. Do we have a record of where they told us to search? Barring that, we could always poke around the subway tunnels again or somethin'."

Kang sat down at the computer and began to dig through the message board, "Let's check and see." It took a few minutes, but he found the post that CFP-TCI had made and pulled it up. "It's still here. I didn't get anything useful from them, but I remember that some of the others on the island managed to get some information."

"Oh that," Bill grimaced. "I didn't get anything useful from them either, except that they were transmitting from somewhere off the island."

Bill had that creeping sensation that there was something else huge they should be able to figure out from these files if they just knew where to look or how to look at it, like Einstein finding completely new ways to think about energy and motion even though he was working with the same data everyone else had.

"Y'know, Theseus is still functional, we could send him somewhere," Bill thought out loud.

"Actually sounds like a good idea," Mac murmured, still looking over the files. There really wasn't anything new that he could say at this point, nothing new he would likely be able to discern from the images and words. Coordinates meant they knew where they were, progress meant they were keeping track of them...everything.

What else was there to say?

"...This's insanity," he muttered under his breath, turning away to rub at his forehead.

"Theseus... that was that robot you had built for scouting, right?" Kang hadn't gotten to see it yet, and he was curious. He went silent, going through the CFP post, but not finding anything they hadn't already guessed or known. Cursing quietly in Nerakese, he started going through the new files again for any details he might have missed, noting with some irritation that their captors didn't even know the proper name of some of the non-human races they'd nabbed.

Wait. One of the reports...

"Take a look at this," the draconian pointed at the screen. "This is why CFP-TCI hasn't contacted us again."
