It was a night like any other, really. Angelicus had retreated to the library to get some breathing room from Stein and Fran and was sitting in one of the plush chairs of the reading area with a book open in front of her.
Of course the picture was less homey than it sounded. She was actually seated on the copious nothing about two inches above the chair, and the book (Solaris, which she'd borrowed from Daniel) was being held open in front of her black bird with her opposite hand and read through its eyes. Not to mention the fact that the "breathing room" she needed was to clear the thoughts of the horrifying experiments being performed on a living creature in the operating room.
She didn't expect to be interrupted, except perhaps by Daniel or Hamel, and so she was not particularly on her guard. Both she and the white bird looked as though they had dozed off, eyes closed, heads down. But she was, of course, wide awake.
