The hot wind stung Aladar’s tough hide. He coughed against the smoke as fireballs pelted the ground. “Can anyone hear me?!” Neera’s got the kids, Plio and the others are in the caves with them... Aladar bellowed, but no one answered his call. I KNOW I saw someone out here, not everyone’s in the caves!
A pterosaur swooped by, avoiding the flames.
And then a familiar roar echoed in the valley followed by a series of screams he’d never heard before. Bearing his beak, he plunged through the smoldering debris to comparatively untouched forest. When lightning struck he could make out the strange illuminated beast, ridden by large lemur-like creatures. On the other side, the brightest red carnotaur he’d ever seen snarled. The boxy creature fled, and the predator raced to catch its prey.
Whatever it was, it needed help. Aladar’s eyes were wide in the black forest, and occasionally blinded by a white-hot streak piercing the darkness. He watched the path taken by the newcomer, noting its short round legs couldn’t make it over the many obstacles it had to avoid.
Finally it paused, and the area was quiet. Aladar sniffed the air. No, the carnotaur’s still around! He ran ahead, seeing a fallen tree in the path. Yet the creature still stood in place. He bellowed only to have his call droned out by the carnotaur, who prepared to lunge. Lightning flashed and the lemurs screamed.
With all his might, Aladar lifted the tree just in time for the creature and lemurs to dash under it. However, the carnotaur had other ideas and began to bear down on them. Throwing the tree to the side, he ran to their aid only for the world to flash white and a shock-wave to nearly knock the wind out of him. The world grew turbulent and the wind screeched like a velociraptor. Lights blazed and his skin tingled as he lost consciousness.
. . .
Aladar opened his eyes slowly. He felt almost as if he’d fallen from a cliff. At first nothing looked right, but it slowly grew apparent that nothing was. He focused in the cloudy morning’s light only to be greeted by an alien landscape.
The grass below him smelled strange and tangy. Even the soil as it soaked up the light rain had a different scent. The flowers were unlike any he’d ever seen. Aladar would never imagined them so big and brightly-colored. Or that they would smell that sweet, either. The trees leaves were oddly-shaped. But all this paled on comparison to the area outside the grassy oasis. On one side was an empty river with strange rocky outcroppings dotting the horizon. The same ones were on this shore, too. These tall cliffs shone in the sun like they were made of crystals. All around were barren paths warn down to black rock streaked with yellow. On many of those paths laid dead creatures that looked like the one he’d tried to help...
Upon further inspection, Aladar found the bodies baffling. They smelled like minerals, not decaying flesh. Yet he’d seen one move. Even an insect’s shell smelled like it was once alive.
Rightfully concerned, the iguanodon called out. “Neera! Anyone! Zini, Plio, Yar, Suri! Where are you?!” Aladar bellowed his loudest. The rain helped carry his call off into the distance, echoing its way through the buildings.
