Sherry was a morning person. She supposed it was because her body was still used to her school schedule. Up at seven, in bed by nine, like clockwork. Of course, the night previous had interfered with that schedule, and Sherry had spent the rest of the night awake, sometimes sniffling, sometimes violently rubbing at her face with her sleeves as thought it might rub the words her uncle had tossed on her right off. Her eyes were still a little puffy when she slowly stood up going through the motions to change her clothing, then washed her face, and brushed her teeth. She cycled through the small pile of literature she'd managed to collect from the adults and picked out a couple of books that she hoped the only other girl her age in Irving Place would like. Sherry frowned slightly at the lovingly battered spine of Robinson Crusoe and switched it with a copy of Treasure Island.

She'd read them before, and vaguely remembered requesting a pony as a little(r) girl only to be rewarded with Black Beauty and A Little Princess instead. Her parents had been loving, but weird, she decided with a heavy sigh. It must've been the effect of years of science, she thought and put them on her bed. Sherry checked her hands for the scratches the tree bark had given her when she climbed back over Gramercy Park's fence and snuck back inside. Now that her hands were clean, they looked white and almost invisible, except for the weird roughness of broken skin. It was like having a papercut, but it didn't hurt.

Sherry hoped no one had seen her, she still hadn't thought of a cover story for visiting her uncle, and she hadn't wanted to face Claire or Leon yet. Luckily, neither one of them had volunteered to take her to see Eve. Her stomach grumbled as she picked up the stack of books and hurried past Claire's door.

"I'm going to meet Eve!" she announced as she ran past the older woman's bedroom. She was out the door before Claire had a chance to answer and down the hall to the lobby of 70 Irving Place to wait for Kevin. He hadn't shown up yet, so she opened the to the first page of Treasure Island, and plopped cross-legged on the floor in the boneless way children are able.
