It's been said that the best company you can have in a strange place is a map. Made sense; tells you where you need to go to get out if you need to ( ... )

"Breaking things, MacGyver?" Russel commented as he came in. He still wore that Red Sox sweatshirt, thought it was open, over a crisp, pale blue shirt and black pants. His hands were in his pants pockets, and his stride was a bit loping. "If you've got a problem with Fletcher not being here, you can keep it to yourself," Russel then told him, referencing Mac's earlier request that all of Team Science be present for this.

"And hi to you too, Mr. Sunshine," Mac shot back, his arms crossed. He didn't have a clue what Russel's problem was - granted, he might have wanted to check the network for any news about that - but really. Kid was getting on his nerves, and that was saying a lot.

Sighing, he nodded at the projector. "It's fixed, actually. Cap said it couldn't be done, but I guess I proved her wrong. Not a moment too soon, too. Meeting should start any time now."

And he needed a drink. Unscrewing a cap from a nearby water bottle, he took a refreshing swig, letting out a "phoo!" as he came up for air. Replacing the cap, he put the bottle back down and looked back up at Russel, exhaling as he did. "Anyways, I guess you can tell him what went on here, if he's not one of the folks who've been disappearing. Speakin' of, I gotta say...I'm just taking it on faith that folks who disappear go back home...is there any way we can test that theory that pops to mind?"

If he were to be perfectly honest with anyone, it'd be that this whole situation had him spooked. So he reacted accordingly. "I've heard a couple people say that they did just that." He shrugged. "What other evidence do we need?"

Mac never really played the role of a detective before, but what with all the time he'd spent on this island of mystery, he was getting the hang of it. Certainly helped that almost every single major happening in this place ran in wearing a neon Hawaiian shirt, blasting Ride of the Valkyries while yelling LOOK AT ME! I'M MYSTERIOUS! at the top of its metaphorical lungs. Either way, he was growing steadily unsatisfied with the convenient "we all go home" idea. Didn't seem to fit with everything else that was happening, and he said as much.

"Much as I wanna believe it, we can't say for sure whether or not those folks're the exception to the rule. There's gotta be some way of testing it. If nothing else, it might tell us where to look to find answers to everything else about this place."

Russel shrugged, and waved a hand dismissively. "That's tangential to everything else. We have more immediate things to worry about." He shrugged. "Like that poor sap that became one of the monsters."

Yeah. Andrew Basil. He had no clue how...and he had no clue why. All he knew was that it was crazy, and coming from him, that was saying something. Mac's hand was on his chin, and his eyes were downcast. Hell.

"Well...that's something to worry about, for sure. I don't have any clue if we can reverse it, or if we have to stick to Plan A...I dunno. Either way...I'm not lookin' forward to the problems he might end up givin' us," he muttered, throwing his hands up in frustration.

"The most important thing we need to find out is how long he had it. That'll keep it from happening again. We don't want to keep increasing these things' numbers."

He sighed. "Aerith and the other Healers are stepping up their methods, which is good. But until we find out how this works, we really can't find out the means we need to eliminate it completely. Dr. Sera was working on the crab venom itself. He's the one that needs the most support."

"Yeah, and like I told him, it's outta my league," Mac conceded, dipping his head a little. "That's not important, though. What is important is that Team Science has the tools Manhattan needs to solve this thing...and we're gonna solve this."
