Mal stood outside a door, just sort of staring at it for a moment. This was absurd, he wanted to check on Inara, it was only natural. She was part of his crew, or at least she had been, and that still had to count for something.
So why the hell had he been standing there for two minutes?
Shaking his head, Mal remembered the numerous times he had charged headfirst into gunfire without a hint of fear. He was not going to shame himself and his unit by letting himself be held back by some confusion over a woman. Even worse, over Inara.
Shaking his head, Mal reached down and using the spare key he'd stolen from behind the hotel's counter he let himself in and strode into the hotel room.
"Inara? You're not dead yet are you?"
