It was an understatement to say that Hamel was tired. It had been a week since he had last had a decent night's sleep and his body still hadn't fully recovered from the Assault on Central Park that had happened a few days ago. In fact, these last few days have been nothing but a blur for Hamel. Nothing really jumped out at him a side from the thought of rescuing Flute from wherever she was. Of course, fighting the big monster Clover to reach that goal certainly didn't do much for his health. He did manage to get well acquainted with a few building walls out of the event, though they were a little to rough for his personal taste ( ... )

Lute had spent the entire time doing what he had resolved to do, and that was defend the place the party would be returning to. No question or care to his own well being, he had fought with the sole idea of making sure everyone else, including those fighting with him, were safe. In doing so he had resorted to magic, which was a surprising drain. One barrier spell and megido flame had him feeling like had done nothing but cast high level spells all day. Luckily for him though, that had been enough to keep the crab count low enough to pick off by hand. It also had given everyone else easier shots ( ... )

Raiel stopped.

That face.

It was the wrong kind of familiar.

He backed away, slowly, hands coming up to his mouth; the look on his face could best be described as unbelieving terror.

He didn't even realize he'd dropped Hamel.

Hamel was too busy dwelling on himself to really look around him. He even considered on taking a nap while he was being carried. At least whenever they got to their destination to meet the girls, he would have some semblance of life in him ( ... )

Lute hadn't seen the two approach, but he did hear them, well more he hear Hamel yell. He turned to look towards the sound with a questioning expression. He was only vaguely aware of what Hamel and Raiel looked like. And by that he really wasn't aware at all. Most his knowledge on them was little bits, scattered, and probably not very useful. If he had known more, maybe he would have thought twice about his actions.

"Are you alright?" He called out truly worried. Was there a doctor anywhere? Maybe he could help, he at least knew first aid. "Are you hurt badly? I don't have anything on me... but maybe someone else around has some medical supplies of some sort," he started to move forward wanting to get a closer look, the horrors on their faces hadn't registered to him at all.

No. No, it couldn't be. It was, though. That face was not one he was ever going to forget. It was Bass. Here.

What was Bass doing here?

He stumbled, fell, didn't care enough to catch himself. He just kept staring up at Lute in shock, not hearing what he was saying. Bass. The first King of Hell's Army. The one who had taken Pandora and sparked the disaster that had ruined both Raiel and Hamel's lives.

He thought he'd finally gotten away from the bad memories of home. Manhattan was a fresh start where he didn't need to think about things like the Anthem disaster or the Kings of Hell's Army.

But no.

Home had followed them here.

There were tears in his eyes now, a hopeless despair mixed in with the terror on his face. Why this? Why? Of all people, why Bass?

You could hear Hamel's teeth grind against each other, his beaten body winding and growing more tense with every step that Bass took toward him. Though it was shock even for him that home had followed them, the unbridled rage that burned through his blood, completely removing any fear of the Hell King.

He was going to kill the bastard! Everything that he done to him, every hardship that he had faced for years, all of the hatred and loneliness and loss, all of it was because of him. He was going to tear the Hell king limb from bloody limb until Hamel got answers.

Hamel's eyes were almost slitted as he glared at the approaching Lute, almost glowing from the pure fury and hatred he had for this man.

Lute paused, noticing the tension that had been building in the air. He looked around him confused, as if they had to be looking at someone else. He paused and looked back feeling awkward.

"Is something wrong?"

Is something wrong? Is something wrong? Was he mocking them?

Of course he was. He had to know they were in no state to put up a fight. It was obvious just looking at them. There was nothing they could do but run.

(And somewhere in Raiel's mind the rest of the crowd at the dock had turned into the mazoku soldiers of Hell's Army, so there was no way those people were going to help if Bass decided to just kill them right then and there.)

He crawled forward, keeping his eyes on Bass, trying to reach Hamel before Bass tried anything. Tugged at Hamel's cloak, grabbed his shoulder, and then finally dared to spare him a glance.

What he saw in Hamel's face left him frozen, horrified.

"BAAAASSSSSS!" He roared as he leapt from the ground, his hands out stretched to wring and tear that neck of the Hell King standing before him. His hands now shaped into demonic claws and his small nub of a horn had grown several times it size, its round tip now given a very sharp point.

He was going to kill the fucker, tear the flesh from his bones and eat whatever was left. He didn't care if Bass tried to defend himself or that Hamel would die in the end. The last thing this bitch was going to see was Hamel's claw right through his chest.

Unfortunately, his legs didn't want to cooperate with this wish and Hamel fell only one foot from where he previous laid. He growled frustration at his state, clawing at the pavement as he struggled to get up.

He couldn't do it. All these years of adeventure and preparing for this day and he was just as weak now as he was when he was 5.

"Damn it. Fucking Damn it!"

"Bass!?" The outburst had surprised and startled him. A gut reaction caused Lute to turn quickly behind him and then back. No, it wasn't that Bass was here... no... it was him wasn't it? His expression quickly went from shock to despair. They must be Hamel and Raiel....

"No... you're wrong, Bass isn't here," he tried to explain, ready for Hamel to hit him, but the violinist fell before he could reach him. Lute felt like crying, it was too sad. They must be so torn inside, lost, angry. "It's a mistake."

The changes in Hamel's appearance distracted him from Bass. He was going to transform again. Just like Anthem... Just like Score...

"Hamel!" He shot to his feet, lunging for Hamel as he went for Bass's throat.

Even if Bass needed to die, Raiel wouldn't be able to stop Hamel before he turned on him. Hamel would kill him. Like he'd killed his parents. Like he'd almost killed him in Score.

But Hamel fell before Raiel could stop him, and Raiel just froze beside him, with his hands over his mouth, tears running down his face.

Bass was going to kill them both.

He fell to his knees at Hamel's side, slowly letting his gaze move from Hamel up to Bass. (Lute's words were falling on deaf ears. Raiel was too caught up in flashbacks to even hear him.)

They were going to die.

"DON'T FUCK WITH ME!" He snapped back at his standing foe. Damn it, The bitch was mocking him. Hamel could only be on his knees in front of the General, just like before. He couldn't do anything, even now when he needed it the most.

He wanted his limbs to move! Push forward! Anything! Anything better than to kneel there like a pathetic child. He lifted his head to shoot Lute a glare that no one really should be given. His now pointed jaw revealed in an angered sneer as the Hero of Justice could only wish very, very hard that Lute would just die from the look.

Damn it, Why did it have to be after fighting Clover!?

"Don't fucking mock me! I know who you are, you mass murdering bastard! I'LL FUCKING KILL YOU!"

Lute wished he could do something to ease Hamel's suffering, both of their suffering, but there was little he could do. Especially when they were blinded by rage and fear. He lowered his head, guilt and sadness sweeping through him. If only he had not failed then... if only he had been able to get Bass' head as well....

"I'm not mocking you, it's true. I'm not Bass, my name is Lute. It's the truth, I promise. Ask Flute, she under- knows who I am," he spoke softly, though he doubted anything he said was heard. He'll have to explain everything to Flute as well. He never did go into detail.

Flute was rushing through the crowds gathered at the dock. She was still tired and shaken from the whole ordeal, but just being back on Manhattan-- just the promise that she could see Hamel and her brother and all the rest of her friends gave her legs energy that she couldn't have produced otherwise.

She silently prayed that none of them had been hurt in the rescue attempt, and she looked back and forth frantically for them as she pushed through the people. At last she spotted Raiel's familiar flash of green off to the side. The tears she had been holding back since she and Flonne comforted each other on the island now leaked freely from the corners of her eyes and she ran as fast as she could towards them.

"Hamel! Raiel!" she yelled, rushing over to them. "Nii-chan! I-"

Her smile faded immediately. Something was desperately wrong here. Raiel was crying, and the look on Hamel's face struck fear into her already shaken heart. She glanced over at Lute and her expression twisted with concern.

"What's going on?" she asked quickly.

Lute? Lute?! He only had a second to process that before Flute appeared, and at that point he just...kind of overloaded. Bass, the man responsible for the disaster at Anthem, was standing right in front of them. But he was also telling them that he wasn't Bass, he was Prince goddamn Lute of Sforzando. Hamel was halfway to his Mazoku form. And Flute had just appeared in the middle of a highly volatile situation, which put her in danger. And he just...lost it.

"What do you mean you're Lute!" He pulled himself to his feet, standing protectively over Hamel. His voice was unsteady; he was still in tears. "Lute died, and you're--" He looked over at Flute, throwing an arm out to his side like he was warning her away. "He's Bass! Hell King Bass! That's a face I'll remember for the rest of my life, I could never mistake it!" Turning back to Lute, his other hand curled into a fist in front of his chest, turning his pose into something more befitting a dramatic hero. "What the hell do you mean, you're Lute ( ... )
