An hour later...

It was cold. That was the first thing through HUNK's mind as his eyes fluttered open weakly. The second thought,as cool air filled his lungs and hit his face, was that someone had taken his mask off. The third was that he was pinned down. something on his legs.

He raises his head, glancing down to his lower body. It wasn't something pinning him. It was someone. A woman, apparently unarmed, and unconscious.

What the Hell?

HUNK takes a moment to look around. His shirt has been peeled off, along with his tactical vest, and both are lying beside him. His MP5 is there as well, albeit low laying in the wet, slushy snow. Great. It would take at least an hour or two to properly oil and clean it now. At least he still had his sidearm.

He glances to his wounded arm, and realizes with shock that there isn't a wound there anymore. But how? That should be impossible. The woman at his feet must have had something to do with it. HUNK wanted an answer, and that alone was good enough reason to not just get up and abandon her here.

HUNK quickly dresses and reslings his weapon, then bends down and lifts Kida over his shoulders in a fireman's carry. He wasn't at full strength, but he did feel much better. And if they didn't get inside soon, they'd both die of exposure.

With a mighty kick, HUNK takes down the front reception door to Radio City Music Hall and enters, pausing in the doorway to assess the situation and look for threats. When it seems safe enough, HUNK takes Kida inside further.

Eventually, he finds a manager office and takes the girl inside, laying her down on an office desk and taking a seat in a nearby chair. While he waits, he begins the process of disassembling, cleaning, oiling, and reassembling his sub machinegun.

The first thing Kida felt was the cold water that had seeped through parts of her coat and one leg of her jeans. With a moan she curled into a ball, shivering a bit. She squeezed her eyes shut before opening them, squinting in the light. She was on a desk, illuminated by the strange cold lights only seen in indoor places here--

Kida bolted upright. She knew immediately she'd been moved, but where? Her eyes landing immediately on a familiar form, she asked, "Where are we?" Kida was instantly on-guard. First healing someone caused her to pass out, and now she was somewhere she's never been. Her hand was half-behind her back, ready to grab her dagger she had concealed in her jeans.

Her eyes glanced around the room, noting the location of a door.

HUNK looks up at Kida, though his expression is hidden behind his mask. He's just finishing up with his weapon, snapping the last retaining pin in place.

"Radio City Music Hall. The building I passed out in front of. We're safe here, for now," HUNK says, his voice raspy and chilling through the mask vocalizer. "You were unconscious, so I had to get you out of the middle of the street."

Kida slid off the desk to her feet, considering this. "So I did fall unconscious," she said quietly, eyes looking away at nothing a moment.

She turned back, cocking her head and hip. "Are you ill? Why do you still wear that mask?" She had seen something similar to it before when the 1914 expedition first came to Atlantis.

"Yes," HUNK says with a nod in regards to her statement. "I'm not sure how long we were both out there. All I know is that when I woke up, you were out."

He slings his now reassembled weapon over his shoulder and stands, beginning to adjust his gear.

"No, I'm not ill. It's just...a part of my uniform. I'm so used to wearing it now that I feel naked without it. Besides, it never hurts to be prepared."

HUNK looks Kida over, then nods to himself.

"I suppose I owe you my thanks. That infection took hold of me faster than I thought it would."

Kida hummed a note in reply.

"I would suppose it would not, but do you not ever tire of letting no one see your face?" It felt awkward talking to this man. Not only could she not see even his eyes, his mask was reminicient of a 95-year-old memory, and not a pleasant one. She reminded herself that those were different circumstances, and this was a different mask, too.

"You are welcome, but why did you not seek a doctor? The wound looked... Memorable." She tilted her head the other way, narrowing her eyes in mild bewilderment.

"This is my face," HUNK rasps out. "To those who know me, anyway. What's underneath isn't important."

He turns his head to look out the door, then back to Kida. This girl sure had a lot of questions. That was okay, though. HUNK had a few of his own.

"Hospitals are in short supply, if you haven't noticed. I was seeking out a doctor when I collapsed. I would have went earlier, but I thought I could tough it out. Apparently, that's impossible."

HUNK thinks that over, then shrugs his shoulders.

"How did you heal me, anyway? You didn't have any medical supplies on you, and I've never seen field medicine heal that effectively."

The queen blinked at HUNK, crossing her arms and trying to decide what to make of him. It seemed strange that someone would consider that mask part of their self-image. "On a superficial level, yes. ...How did you come to cast off your old face?"

"A wound that severe can easily become infected. With our current situation, you should never try to do so much on your own." Her expression was concerned, yet she was still blunt.

Kida's eyes widened ever so slightly. There were many, thanks to Madison Square Gardens, that had seen her heal. The details of it were unclear, even to those who had been healed. Though purposefully vague, Kida still spoke the truth in her mind. "I will say that my faith has much to do with it. At least here in Manhattan, it involves channeling some of my energy into you. I was surprised it took that much strength from me." For the moment, she decided to leave her crystal out of conversation. A tool or not, it was still a sacred relic, and it was the power of the Mother Crystal itself that was the most precious secret she had of her home.

"It's not that I casted it off. It's just that it simply doesn't matter. I'm a soldier."

HUNK raises his eyebrows at Kida's comment about her healing methods. Faith and religion were tools of the weak to him. Always had been, always would be. He had a feeling Kida was holding something back, but he didn't need to press her on that issue right now.

"Do you think you have enough strength to get back to safety? I need to get moving."

"Yeees?" Kida replied with a shrug of her shoulders, not understanding. "You are a soldier. Yet you are still a person. Why does this make a difference?" The queen was used to wearing masks during hunts and fights, but aside from during the occasional festival, there was no point in wearing them.

She took a deep breath and sighed. "Very well. I believe so. I am simply a little tired. ...It is still day out is it not?" It had been morning when she left. Because of this, she had not brought her spear, taking only her dagger with her. Kida began to look for a window. If it was night she may need an escort.

"How can you be so sure I'm still a person?"

HUNK tilts his head at her and breathes out through his respirator a few times, then turns it to glance out the door and into the hallway. It wasn't dark yet, but the sun was setting steadily. Nightfall would arrive within an hour or so.

"It's sunset. The crabs will be out in force soon. Where are you staying?" HUNK racks the slide on his MP5. "It'd be safer to travel together."

Kida's tone denoted she felt she was stating the obvious. "I have seen your face beneath that mask and you did not leave me out there to die."

Sunset. Kida considered sneaking her way home, since she was a skilled hunter, but paused at the man's suggestion. Person or not, she was somewhat hesitant. "...Down 5th Street south from here. What about you?"

HUNK doesn't reply to that comment. Sure, he could tell Kida he would have left her out there to freeze and die without giving a second thought if he didn't need answers, but he had a facade to keep up.

"Just north of Battery Park. We're headed in the same direction," HUNK says, looking down at the floor in thought. "Can you use a handgun?"

Kida noted how much further south he was than she. "That is... four miles from here," she said, trying to calculate out Naturally he would be headed south as well. Most of the island was south of here. "I am not as far. I can escort you part of the difference." Her tone denoted she certainly was not afraid to.

"Not well," Kida shook her head. As Milo might put it, she understood the basic principles of aiming and shooting, but it was by no means a weapon she was used to. "I can try."

"That would be appreciated," HUNK says, grimacing under his mask. There's no way in Hell he would ever willingly ask for help, especially an escort, but it was all part of keeping up this charade. "There's safety in numbers."

He reaches down to his thigh and withdraws a handgun from a holster, clicks off the safety, then turns it around and hands it to Kida butt-first.

"It's ready to go. All you have to do is point it at what you want to hit and pull the trigger. You have eighteen shots in there."

"Agreed" Kida nodded. "Shall we part, then, at the University? I can find my way back from there." She inwardly sighed. It was still a mile and a half away from her own home, but she hesitated to leave anyone, armored or not, to walk three miles at night by themselves here.

Kida accepted the gun and handled it with as much care as she would a thin vail of contact poison from a creature of her home. She knew very well what a gun was capable of, and though this gun looked different from the ones she had seen in 1914, Kida had seen how they had been held. "Eighteen shots. I understand." With a pause, the queen thought it best to save her shots for fairly close-range.

((OOC: This may be her first time using a gun, BTW.))
