To mark World Book Day James' school have decided that every child should attend in fancy dress that day - as a favourite character from a book. So I had a chat with James about which character he'd like to go as and he was very decided that he wanted to be a star. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star is his very favourite nursery rhyme; I think maybe it's because I used to sing it to him when he was a baby. After every feed, and over and over, when I would pace up and down in the early hours, trying to lull him back to sleep if he was colicky. Anyway, he wanted to be a star. Great, I thought. Simple costume to make, won't take a minute.

So I'm driving home this evening, mulling over various things, and it suddenly occurred to me that he won't be able to sit down if he's wearing a four foot cardboard star. Cue another animated discussion about possible alternatives. James' choice of story? Jack and the Beanstalk. Fantastic. It'd be no problem to dress him up as Jack. But no. James wants to be a beanstalk.

A beanstalk?!

How I kept a straight face I will never know. *grin* How on earth do I make a beanstalk costume?? Not to mention that with exams in two weeks I don't have time to get the sewing machine out and whip something up. Thankfully, after yet more discussion (let's just say James is as concise as his mother), and a little gentle coercion, we've decided he's going to be either the prince from Snow White, or Old King Cole. So, just a crown and cloak to make. Far easier than a beanstalk, thank goodness. How relieved am I?
