Yankees?

Cut and pasted from my yhg journal. For anyone that watches me there as well as here, my apologies for the repetativeness.

No, not the baseball team. Japanese Yankees. Yankis?

I'm feeling a bit intrigued by a couple of journal entries I read about "yankees" that were bascially trouble makers in their small towns in Japan, and they are called Yankees.

Also in Fruits Basket Tohru's mom was one and so is her friend.....

Is it just someone that refuses to conform, but is basically harmless other than being a "punk"? The one really interesting journal entry I read was about an American living in a small Japanese town, where all the teachers went totally bonkers (enough to go running out into the yard still in their indoors shoes) when a young man with one pant leg rolled up, drove around the school yard on his moped, under the speed limit, with his radio turned up loud.

The American couldn't understand why this caused such a rukkus, but the Japanese teachers were all pissed off and calling him 'that yankee boy'.

So can anyone tell me a bit more about it? I guess I'm just nosey... but I'm also wondering if it's a term for a youngster that's rude, because they think westerners are rude?

Plus some of the fashion I have seen for it intrigues me as well.... women binding their chest with tape and wearing an open shirt... the medical masks...... my muse is poking at it and wants to know what the deal is.....
