Hundreds of butterflies turned up in our garden today, thanks in no small part to the Buddliea tree. They sat on it and leisurely sunned themselves, and when space on the tree became too small even for wee butterflies they rested instead on my t-shirts hanging on the line, and one perched delicately on a concrete tile, orange wings glowing against the grey slab.

Then a blackbird swooped in and suddenly the garden experienced a hurricane of tumbling coloured wings.
