The days are growing warmer, and that makes for restlessness, something which is certainly not helped by high-collared dresses or stiff corsetry. For this reason, it is not until the sun begins to sink that Kitty ventures out with cropped hair showing, dressed in waistcoat and trousers with a gentleman's jacket slung over her shoulder and tie undone.
With the sky growing dark, anyone looking from a distance will see a young gentleman out for a walk, but closer up they may catch the (admittedly modest) swell of hips and bosom under her tailored clothes, the two-inch heels on her shoes, the rather delicate facial features with their dusting of freckles. She would never dare do this in daylight, but in the dark she can picture the vague outlines of an audience, and softly, very softly, she begins the first verse of "Sweethearts and Wives," her voice clear and sweet and, though quiet, unhesitating.
