Kitty is in her room, the door left open, peering at her reflection in the mirror. She wears one of her costume suits, smoothing out the wrinkles with her hands, frowning at a worn patch on the sleeve. She's taken her false fall off, and now runs her fingers through her own hair, measuring the length of it -- past her chin now, it's been so long ( Read more... )

Ganymede is passing by the open door, whistling. He only meant to glance in the open door, and only because it was open, but he gets caught in a stare in the doorway.

Kitty hears the whistling and turns to face Ganymede. "Oh--!" She blushes faintly, embarrassed to be caught playing at boyhood when she hasn't set foot onstage in so long.

Ganymede starts away as well, though, embarrassed too. "I meant not--"

"No, it's all right, just -- you gave me a bit of a start." She flashes a nervous smile. "I s'pose this looks a little odd."

She cannot help but laugh. "Nay, good lady."

Kitty arches an eyebrow. "Not at all? You can't be ordinary folk, then. Theatrical, maybe?"

She laughs and shakes her head, then lifts her chin cheekily. "I am a princess in disguise," she says, because she knows she won't be believed.

A grin. "So grand as that, eh? I'm just a music hall girl, when it comes down to it."

"What is that?"

"Sure. Audiences like seeing a girl in trousers. Dunno why, but they do."

"They know you are a lady?"

"Of course they do. Wouldn't be any point if they didn't. It makes the joke."

"The joke?"

"The joke of watching me sing love songs about girls, and flirt with them and give them roses and such. It's nothing out of the usual to have a lad do it, and a girl in skirts can't or she's nothing better than a tom. Put her in a fancy suit, though, and cut her hair, and paint her up a little, though, and you've got something to laugh at -- and a fine pair of legs for the men's benefit."
