Summary: Klaus is the substitute teacher for the Mystic Falls’ English class.

Before lunch Monday, the seniors-including Caroline and Elena-heading off to their English class were met with an unexpected substitute teacher. A few of the other female classmates walking in ahead of Caroline giggled at the new teacher. His warm greeting made even Caroline feel somewhat unnerved, but she was not going to let him get the better of her-vampire or not. The girly Caroline Forbes was through playing those silly mind games.

Elena elbowed Caroline in the ribs, gestured towards a pair of seats away from their usual spot in the second row. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to know that Klaus would follow the pair from his vantage point at the front of the room.

Another surprise came whirling through the door as the final bell went off, Tyler stood in the doorframe-stared, mouth agape at Klaus sitting at his English teacher’s desk. Klaus stood up and went over to him, his smile appeared genuine but it was probably just a front to get Tyler to let his guard down, Caroline thought.

Clapping his charge on the shoulder, Klaus made a sweeping motion towards the seats in front of him. His voice carried through the entire room, “Welcome back, Tyler, I hope you don’t mind my subbing for your English teacher today,” he turned to address the whole class, “well, class, it has come to my attention that your regular teacher has fallen ill in recent days.” A few murmurs started up around the room.

Tyler found his seat two seats to the right and one seat up from the girls, and Caroline could feel a note brush past her arm. It was in Elena’s penmanship, of course. She wrote, ‘Yeah, the kind of illness that comes from vampire’s drinking too much of your blood.’ This made Caroline laugh out loud which caused Klaus to acknowledge her.

“Would you care to share your amusement with the class, Caroline?” The way he said it, he was more than amused and slightly intrigued. Out of the corner of her eye, Caroline noticed Tyler squirm uncomfortably in his seat.

Blushing scarlet, Caroline shook her head and said, “No, nothing at all.”

Even if he might have been disappointed, Klaus turned his attention back to the whole class. It was a relief when she could look down at the assignment they were supposed to have read today. She didn’t want to make any more eye contact with the teacher for the rest of the period. If only they weren’t in the drama phase of literature, anything but Julius Caesar would have been better.

“I know you have gone through this part already, but it is always best to review what we have learned,” Klaus paused in the middle of the lecture, “what do you think Caesar meant when he said, ‘cowards die many times, and the valiant die but once’?”

As usual a high school class was not the place for intelligent discussion; Klaus rolled his eyes and continued, “If you want to face something, you will face it. Running away from a problem won’t make it any easier. The longer you go without addressing it, the harder it is to stop.”

Even as he talked to the whole class, Caroline realized that he was addressing Tyler in particular. The nerves that were being pushed on both sides lit up the room, Tyler’s steely express clashed with Klaus’ hard stare.
“If you love someone, you don’t leave them with just a voice mail three days later.”

His voice echoed in her head by the end of the class.
