Summary: Sam knows the magnitude of what he's asked of Dean.

Sam drives until the sun disappears behind the horizon, the last pink rays fading to dark blue. Dean has his head tucked against his door, eyes closed, but Sam knows he's not asleep; he can always tell when Dean is faking by the small hitch at the end of each inhale. He usually doesn't bother pretending unless he and Sam had had a fight and Sam's not certain why he's doing so now but he can't help but feel grateful for it; the silence gives him time to think.

He knows the magnitude of what he's asked of Dean. Sam has been Dean's responsibility since before Sam could remember, taken care of him and looked out of him, and Sam realizes how difficult it's going to be for Dean to step back and treat Sam like something other than his baby brother-an equal.

Sam considers Dean's words carefully before he whispers, “Dean?” His brother doesn't give up the facade of sleep, so Sam just sighs and adds, “Thank you.”

It isn't until fifty miles later, when they're tucked into another obscure motel room that Dean turns in his bed, eyes looking black in the darkness, that he replies, “You're welcome, Sammy.”
