Kohaku tugged on the weighted chain of his kusarigama, his aim having been on the mark. The small doe he had hunted for several hours, now lay dead on the forest floor. He rushed forward, the neko youkai launching herself as she transformed into her smaller form and landed on his shoulder.
“I’m getting stronger,” Kohaku whooped in pride, his hands quickly drawing his chain up and slipping the kusarigama into the waistband of his taijiya attire. He leaned down and inspected his work as the two-tailed cat mewled from her perch.
Laughing he petted her head, scratching behind her furry ears, “This is good. We have a good supper tonight.”
Kirara gave a small mewl and started purring contentedly.

The boy poked at the fire to keep it ablaze, before he set aside his stick and picked up the smoothed wedge of bark, a portion of cook meat cooling on it. Kirara mewled, pawing at his hip, waiting patiently for her share. Kohaku tore a tender piece off and offered it to the feline.
The two ate in silence, Kohaku eating slowly as he distantly stared into the flames that barely licked at the doe he had roasted over the pit. He stuck another piece of meat in his mouth, before giving another to Kirara.
“I’ll have to go to the village soon,” he said to his companion. The feline licked her paws before mewled and hopping into his lap. She stared up at him with eyes full of comprehension. Kohaku rubbed his hand across her back, scratching behind her ears as she started purring happily.
“Sango probably misses me.” Kirara mewled and pawed his hand, staring up at him. Kohaku smiled and scratched under her chin, “Awe, you miss her too Kirara?”
The neko youkai started purring more in answer to his question. The boy grinned and nodded, looking to his kusarigama he had laid aside, thinking of his sister. “Then we’ll go see her tomorrow.”
Kirara mewled and Kohaku laughed, going back to his meal.
