Small Things

One scarf.

A gathered scarf, knit with US size 7 and 10.5 needles using Lion Brand Tweed Stripes yarn. 5-6 inches wide, depending on if you're measuring the wider or thinner portions, and 69 inches long.

I don't know if you ever think it, but I do all the time. Every time I finish a charity project. Every time I put another preemie hat or blanket square into the box, I ask it. What difference does this one thing make?

I mean really when it comes down to it, a scarf doesn't come close to touching the needs found in this world. Even when put into a group, a box-load or even truck-load of scarves still doesn't cover it. Famine. Disease. Addiction. Disaster. Violence. Hurt. Loneliness. Poverty.

The truth is, one scarf doesn't cure anything.

Right?

“We know only too well that what we are doing is nothing more than a drop in the ocean. But if the drop were not there, the ocean would be missing something.”
- Mother Teresa

One scarf. One drop in the ocean. What difference can it make?

All the difference in the world.

Truthfully I have no real idea what place this scarf has in the grand scheme of things. I do know why it was made - when a friend asked if anyone was interested in a charity raffle for the Philipians, I grabbed my knitting needles. This scarf will be one of several prizes up for grabs in the raffle, with all money going to the relief effort of my friend's choice.

One scarf. Most-likely, it will keep someone warm in the winter and nothing more. Yet the small act knitting a scarf, - or hat, or blanket square - done with love and compassion can do so much. It's a way of telling the person who recieves it, "You are loved. You are important, and worth something made just for you."

And that, that can - and does - change the world.

"In this life we cannot do great things. We can only do small things with great love."
- Mother Teresa
