About two years ago friends of mine recommended I read the book Choosing to SEE by Mary Beth Chapman, wife of recording arist Steven Curtis Chapman. The book details the Chapman family's lives, including the adoption of their three youngest daughters. Mary Beth also tells of the tragic loss of their youngest daughter, Maria Sue. Maria, only five, was accidently struck by a family car in the driveway and died on the way to the hospital.
The next day while collecting items from their home, Steven came across a drawing made by Maria. She had created a flower. Amazingly, the flower had six petals, the same number of children in the Chapman family, and one was colored in blue, Maria's favorite color. On the bacl she had drawn a butterfly and with it, a word she had never used before - SEE.
In the years following, Maria's flower has become a symbol of hope for both the Chapmans and for those of us who have been touched by this family's story.
A couple months ago while in Walmart I got a phone call from those friends. Not the phone call one wishes to receive. One which made me wish to do something. But what? Almost in that moment God sent an answer in the yarn aisle.
