A New Thing

Special thanks to theknitwitch - whoever you are - for without her this post would not be made possible. Not really having any pressing things to accomplish yesterday I continued my current goal of finishing off this skein of cherry red acrylic yarn in my stash. One of the members of Homespun Helpers is collecting red, white, and/or blue squares to be made into blankets for veterans, so that has been the plan.

So far, there are eight finished for this effort. The first few I made in a way similar to Grandma's Favorite dishcloth, except without the yarn overs. (It seems I haven't yet uploaded those pictures; will try to do so later tonight.) Four others have been basket weave stitch.

But wait, what about those two at the right end? Allow me to move closer.

Ah yes, these are the two for which I have theknitwitch to thank. After watching her video on the crochet chain stitch again, the only skill in crocheting I had previous experience with, I proceeded to watch some of her other videos. This little guy is my very first crochet project, made of double crochet.

And this one is single crochet. I actually didn't chain enough to make it the desired 8 inches, so had to add a border to it. I will admit that crochet is fun and enjoyable, even if I hold my yarn and needle in the same hand. Opps. But take heart my precious knitting needles; don't run off just yet in fear you'll collect dust as I continue using the hook. While certainly enjoyable and quick and everything else folks have said to me for years (except better - I refuse to take sides on that debate) I think my heart is still won over by knitting.

But as for now, as I try to use up this skein, do believe I'll try my hand at that half double crochet stitch...
