Title: Disrupted By: Jaya Type: Original Rating: Pg13 Warnings: None Word Count: 484
The Great Hall was lit by the roaring fire in the fireplace. It looked as if it had been broken up and tossed around the room as little flickering flames leapt and danced from the tops of the candles all around. Between them and the fire, the dances were moving singing and dancing in a ceaseless swaying pattern that was at once beautiful, indefinable and frightening.
Ever crouched by the door peering through the crack lost in it, as the beat seemed to radiate out from the very center of her. Through the dancers, she could see the children slowly trailing in through the far doors. They looked like sleep walkers with glassy eyes that reflected the red and orange of the lighting. Only a few showed flickers of life and they were few. As she watched on girl tried to run but the touch of a slender hand drained the life away beneath the compulsion to obey.
Ward's hand made her jump but Ever didn't look up at her brother. She wanted to go even knowing what it meant, even seeing the other children drawn into the web of the spell.
"Come on!" Someone was whispering, Roark and Tink were on the other side of the staircase. The closest door was through the conservatory, they could get into the gardens that way. Outside they might get away from the compulsion of the spell. Even with the fae's help, she could still feel the spell. Whatever it was that Knot had done it would not work forever.
"What about all the other children?" Ever whispered pulling her gaze away from the jumping light that shown into the darkness through the cracked door and beneath it where it did not quiet meet up with the floor.
"We can't help them," Tink whispered. Despite the fact that she couldn't see his face in the dark, Ever knew he was angry at the delay.
"What if we disrupt the ritual?"
"It would stop them this time but it would not stop them forever, and you would not get away," Knot said quietly, a flicker of blue sparking around the shape of Roark that now looked wrong on him. He started across the space between them when light blossomed out at the top of the staircase and voices drifted down.
For a moment, panicked looks were shot between them. Ward was the first to react as he ran towards Knot and Tink. However as they moved none of the boys noticed Ever, stand up and turn away until she threw open the doors to the great hall. Light spilled out into the darkened room at the foot of the staircase and with a cry, she ran forward. Spilling candleholders in all directions creating a discordant note across the rhythmic beat of the song breaking it apart. The way a painkiller works on a headache only not as quiet.
