She was pretty, everyone is always talking about the pretty Princesses. How does she get her hair to do that? Are those real pearls on her bodice? Oh, I must get my dressmaker to try that with one of my gowns for the next season. The twittering of the ladies makes my head hurt and none of them notice me. As it happens, I would rather not be noticed.

Everyone’s always talking about who's pretty or who's handsome or if they are feeling especially vicious the ugliest. Now I know people like to tell stories about the ugly Princess, or the exceptionally pretty one but what people sometimes forget is us Princes. You know not all of us are handsome, we don't all pop out all dashing with Princesses swooning at our feet or throwing themselves into our arms. Well some of us do, that is if you're my brother you would be one of them.

I'm not one of those Princes and I know that when the vicious are talking, I'm probably one of the chief subjects of their discussions. Did you see the poor ugly Prince just now? No one's even talking to him. I mean I'd dance with him but he might be catching, I wouldn't want anything on my gloves. Can he dance? I've never seen him. You mean no one's ever asked him? Who'd want to be seen dancing with him when they might be dancing with Varis?

I guess I should tell you know that Varis, is my brother, the one everyone wants to dance with, or talk to. He's also the youngest son. Yeah I'm the eldest, the one who will inherit. Sometimes the ladies will try and be nice because they know I'll be King, but they are the worst fakes of all. Most of them have too much powder on and not enough clothing anyway. How can you like someone when you can't even tell what they look like when they aren't made up like dolls? Though some of the Princes are just as bad, wigs, and powder and coats the color of peacock feathers, or is jungle bird colors the fashion now? That tells you how much I pay attention. I refuse to wear anything so garish, it just makes me look even worse despite the fact that Martin my servant never stops complaining about my drab wardrobe.

At least if anyone dies I have a full set of gray to wear and I did let Martin add some color as long as they aren't too bright. There is a nice deep sea blue that is rather nice I even let him dress me in it for this party. Not that it's making any difference, other then people looking at me more then usual. I’ve always been tempted to turn around and make faces at them, see what they’d say after that. However, mostly I just make eye contact until they look away or I simply ignore them.

Passing between the groups of painted flowers and dandies, I leave my empty glass and pick up another one from the table. Nodding to the man pouring behind in, I walk towards the windows. The weather is starting to turn cool but it’s not yet cold and I’m tired of being surrounded by all of the court fools. Perhaps after a turn in the garden I might feel more like playing the part of the charming Princes. After all Father accepts me to act as if I’m not ugly to be just like all the others. Still I catch him watching Varis as he interacts with the others. I can see on his face that he would rather my brother be heir, he is good with the people, he is good at just about everything but most of all he’s good looking.
