Happy Easter, beautiful people:)
I have a sore throat--I think it could be the result of too much craziness:-P
Yesterday, we made crepes, confetti eggs, and the apples "amy" style (as i like to call them...they're soooo good, dude, especially with chinese apples!) for Linan, who has just turned 25!! She gets prettier everytime i see her, while her boyfriend gets uglier and more annoying. before he came, in fact, i had to "childproof" our house, meaning that i had to put away everything that i didn't want him to touch or flip through. the other day, in fact, he said, "i like going to western people's houses because they have western things! it's so fun." keep in mind that he was saying this while completely disregarding traditional norms of social etiquette. he also says many things about us never being able to understand china and how he never has any use for things that are no chinese. i really want to hit him sometimes, but i just disagree with him about the state of the world, instead. grrr!
anyway, they left and i cleaned the kitchen, went for a run, and then went to a housewarming party at meggie and melissa's apartment. they live in like the most swank complex ever, located just across the street from Guangzhou East Station and Citic Plaza (the tallest building in Guangzhou!). They live on the 17th floor, have gorgeous huge windows, wood floors, spanking white walls, and lots of space. I mean, I thought luke and i were living a luxurious life--they are living a completely non-chinese existence. i felt like i was in the Taft!! That's exactly what it looks like.
there were eight of us there: meggie, melissa, sonya, sam, luke, sage, anthony, and me; we had thai food that melis learned to cook in Chiangmai! I am totally doing that next year--i need to learn how to cook thai food:) she made awesome pad thai, chicken satay, curry, another chicken dish, and for dessert, we had fruit kebabs and chocolate chocolate chip cupcakes flavored with rum. soooooo good.
i forgot to write about him earlier, but anthony was born in Plains, Ga and went to highschool in Moultrie (Colquitt County Packers, one of our biggest rivals in football because besides Lowndes every once a while, they were the only ones who could beat us)!!! How random is it to meet someone from ga on the other side of the world??? he is absolutely one of the coolest people i have ever met--he's doing research for his doctorate in different cities in china, he's one of debbie davis's students, he was luke's ta, and he's from south georgia!!!! i don't think i'll ever get over the fact that we are from extremely insular places and happened to meet for the first time in china.
and he just bought a house in the haven with his partner...when I said 'congratulations' to this bit of news, that led to a discussion on why people say congratulations to news like that in the first place. do you guys have any thoughts on this? or why people congratulate uncles/aunts when they have nieces? or when you buy a new car? is it because we're finally living the so called "american dream?"
