I know this probably won't change your opinion of Inglourious Basterds, but Quentin Tarantino directs movies in the vein of Spaghetti Westerns, and a lot of the special effects and violence are intended to look fake to emulate that era of film making.

I also enjoyed the plot, but to each his own.
