When Howl was small, he'd used to look up at the stars. The sheer size of the dark sky always frightened him. It made him feel so small, as though the sky was a big gaping mouth of some fantastical monster a child's mind imagines.
------
When Howl became older, he practiced his magic so he could be skilled and never have to feel afraid of anything- especially as something silly as the sky.
It took him sometime to learn all the spells and particulars. But, finally, he mastered it. He had never felt more powerful in his life.
------
He met a strange old woman today. She said she was his new cleaning lady.
He didn't believe her. (He didn't need a cleaning lady.) But he let her pretend because she reminded him of the young lady he met before.
And, if he was being truthful with himself, she exhibited a certain aura- a strong, powerful aura he hadn't seen in anyone before, an aura strangely similar to his.
He was intrigued.
------
He leaned across the rail, a mere inches away from her, and thought to himself that he had never been happier before- disregarding the fact that he strongly had a suspicion he had just given his heart away for a second time.
He didn't see a chance of ever getting it back this time. But, and this was the weirdest thing of all, he didn't particularly want it back this time. After all, Sophie was his savior (in more ways than one) and his heart didn't want to let go of her.
They stayed that way until well past sunset, and Howl looked up in the sky.
The twinkling stars above looked as though they were smiling down on them, and Howl forgot that he had ever felt frightened of the vastness above him.
