"Whoa, Montana, got a hot date or something?" you see her walking toward the elevator in an elegant cocktail dress, hair all in curls. She takes your breath away and the thought of some lucky bastard spending the night with her sends coils of jealousy through you.

She doesn't look happy to see you, but nods all the same, and you wonder what you could have done to piss her off now. You gave her the space she needed, despite wanting to be with her more than anything. Apparently, now she doesn't need that space and hooks up with the first person who moves in on her. Maybe she didn't really need the space. Maybe you weren't the one whom she wanted to date.

You gulp down the hurt, thinking it's for the better. Office romance hardly ever works out. And Lindsay Monroe is a damn good friend. (What else she'd be good at, you don't dare wonder.)

"Listen, Danny-" she starts, wringing her hands and trying not to look at you, but doesn't continue.

"Right," you say finally, the awkward tension getting to you. "That's fine. You can date whomever you want. You said you needed space, but what you obviously meant was that you needed space from me." You turn away and start walking angrily back into the office you share. You aren't angry with her, although you want to be so badly -you feel you'd be more than justified- but you can never be mad at her, you're angry at yourself for thinking she felt the same way.

"I made this date as a favor to someone a long time ago, and I couldn't back out now. It doesn't mean anything." You didn't realize she had followed you, one more thing you were wrong about. You turn around and she's looking angry now too. You want to scream or hit something because how dare she be angry while you are? "And for the record, I don't need space from you. I've never needed space from you. It's just...I'm going through something right now, and I need to clear my head before I can be in a relationship with anyone. This, this date is just dinner and opera. It doesn't mean anything, I swear."

Your face is still scowling, but the fiery anger is subsiding. "I'm sorry." You remark, knowing that maybe she's really not ready to start something with you like she says, and maybe she needs a break. You still don't like it. However, you like her more than you could say, and you don't want to hurt her.

You lean your hips on your desk, preparing for her to leave you when she steps closer. You raise your eyebrows, she only smiles shyly and leans toward you.

You close your eyes when you feel her soft lips on yours. Her lips are barely on yours. You want to crush her closer to you and pounce, but you will your arms to stay at your sides. All too soon, she pulls away, taking away your contented moment with her.

"See ya, cowboy." She stares at you for a moment, then walks away.

"See ya," you retort to the empty room.
