She had never regretted her path in life. She became a sailor senshi for a reason - it was her *destiny*, it was what she was meant to do, it was where she felt the most purpose in her life.

Most days, if she kept telling herself, she could believe it.

But, sometimes, sometimes, when she’d see her violin resting in the case buried deep in the closet, she wondered. She wondered what could’ve been. Would she have been diligent in her practice and been invited to play with a symphony? Would her name have become known around the world? If things had turned out differently, that is?

Now it was too late to find out. Now her life mostly consisted of being the guard to Neo-Queen Serenity.

It wasn’t that she hated being one of the sailor guardians to the Queen; it was what she had chosen for her self all those eons ago. She *could’ve* chosen a different path but would that have made her happier in the long run? Knowing that she could’ve done bigger things, made the world a safer place with her powers but didn’t because she chose personal happiness and well being over that of the whole world? It was quite a burden to put on someone so young but Michiru didn’t feel like she had chosen wrong -not at all.

It wasn’t like playing music was her whole life, but it was a big *part* of it and when she stopped playing, something in her soul became discordant. She had to quell her itch to pick up the instrument, lay her chin on the chinrest and strum the bow, to feel the music vibrate in the air.

Neo-Queen Serenity waved her into the throne room on her way to her training. It was quite…odd. It felt like a formal meeting, standing before the King and Queen, but the Queen was being informal.

“Michiru-san, we would like to make a preposition.”

Michiru’s eyebrows rose inquisitively, “Of course, anything your Majesties.”

Neo-Queen Serenity threw a sly look toward her husband, a gleam in her eye that surprised Michiru. The Queen was up to something. The King, on the other hand, resolutely did not look his wife’s way, just put his chin in his hand and smiled at Michiru like he was saying, “What can you do? When the Queen wants something, the Queen will see that she gets it.”

Sailor Neptune stood ready to hear whatever her Queen had to say, no matter if it was serious or one of her Queen’s wackier ideas. (King Endymion still insisted that installing a water slide in the palace was *not* a good idea, nor would it ever be a good idea and if Serenity wanted to cool off in the summertime, she’d just have to go to the lake like everybody else. He was quite insistent on this point.)

What actually came out of Neo-Queen Serenity’s mouth though, she never would’ve been prepared for.

“We would like for you to be Small Lady’s violin teacher.”

Her mouth dropped open ungracefully, but thankfully no embarrassing sound came out.

Queen Serenity looked at her hopefully, wringing her hands nervously - what *she* had to be nervous about, Michiru didn’t know, it wasn’t as though the Queen’s own life was careening precariously on a tilter whirl.

“Uh, your Majesties, it would be my honor.” Did she still even know how to play? Could she pick it up again after all this time?

“Of course, it wouldn’t be right away; it would have to be when Small Lady’s finished with school for the summer. And we don’t want to overburden you with too many responsibilities, so when the time comes your only chief duty will be as Small Lady’s teacher.”

“Of course, that will suffice.” She gave them a nod and went on her way to her training.

It was already dark by the time she got back to the palace from guarding Small Lady on her horse excursion through the Elysian fields. She crept through the dark halls silently, the cold columns holding the sturdy crystal edifice from collapsing, to the living quarters she shared with Haruka.

Her lover wasn’t there to greet her, which wasn’t odd when their duties separated them and they had no way of knowing when they’d spend the night together again. It didn’t happen quite all that much, only when certain royal members had to make trips and needed overnight protection. It made the time when they did see each other that much sweeter.

In the living room portion, she turned on the stereo, a soft melody of classical music echoing through the room; she bee lined toward the bathroom, intent on taking a long hot soak in the bathtub to sooth her aching muscles from the riding.

She did think about the offer she had received that morning from the King and Queen. It was all she could think about on the trip. Of course, she had said yes right away; there was no question of her not doing it. The only thing that had troubled her about the whole thing was how it had seemed to conveniently come at a time when her longing to be surrounded by music got so strong it disturbed even her sleep.

There was definitely one person privy to her sleeping habits and whom Michiru suspected was behind all this…

Michiru looked like something out of a picture from a porn magazine - bubbles filled to the brim of the pristine tub, her long, lean legs dangling crisscrossed over the edge, the room alight only with scented candles placed strategically throughout the bathroom - which is how Haruka found her an hour later and promptly joined her.

After a few minutes of kissing and not talking, Michiru decided to broach the subject of her new duties. Haruka’s answer had seemed politely disinterested, like Michiru was talking about getting her hair cut.

“It seemed strange to me, however, that this would come up now,” she said, playing with the ring on Haruka’s finger. “Don’t you think it’s strange?”

Haruka was totally involved with kissing her shoulder and just hummed her answers. It looked like Haruka was treating it as something not important and potentially life-changing and…maybe it wasn’t. Maybe it was just another part of her duty as a sailor senshi. Except now it was colliding with another huge part of her.

She didn’t know whether to be terrified for herself or ecstatic.

Maybe she would find out when she got there.
