Now that's what I'm talking about...
If you didn't come out on Thursday you missed a DOPE show! As always, we start out the evening with the open-mic and it's been heating up. For the third month in a row we had musicians in the house and I'm digging the trend. Especially tight was band Smartmouth & The Knowitalls - they killed it. We also had emcee Shyst flowing over beats and comedian named DeAngela who had the crowd rolling.
What!? You didn't know that the open-mic was an OPEN-mic - well now you do. Of course we had poetry in the open too, topped off by a special guest - Sekou The Misfit. If you've ever caught this brother on the mic then you're kicking yourself already for missing the show. All this was before we even got to the Slam - much less the features.
In the Slam we had a battle from beginning to end. Dahled opened up the 2nd half of the show and managed the 2nd highest score of the 1st round. He was followed by a who's who of up and coming talent and a couple of tested vets- D. Silence and 2 time team member Prentice Powell. Going into the 2nd round it was the the vets pulling away from the pack. In the end Prentice's damn near perfect 59.8 (out of 60) was just too much for either D.
Finishing off the performance portion of the program were our features for the evening; nerCity and Billy Tuggle. "City" has long been a hometown favorite and showed us again why that is. Billy, while not as well known to the locals showed us why he was Chicago's Slam Champ and one of the hottest touring poets on the scene. After all that we push back the chairs and the DJs take over. Hopefully we'll get more folks to stay around for that part of the show - most of the poets and other performers are still there. If you like what they do that's the best time to tell them... or buy them a drink or their CD.
