So, yesterday morning, at 3:30 Central time, I drove with my dad to the airport, so he could leave on his annual golfing trip with his buddies. While we drove there, he told me about all the things that make Walmart a good and responsible company. Like, every store has to give $36,000 a year to local charities, and how, when a new store is built, the company offers free classes to local businesses on how to compete with Walmart and not lose business. Oh, and part time employees get medical benefits. It was an interesting conversation. It challenged my belief that a corporate business can a) only be concerned with things that increase their profit margins, and 2) that a corporate store won't make decisions that have the best interest of the community they are in at heart, only those of the corporate office.
